Australian paddler bibliography

I have copied the following from my personal Paddler Books database.
They are all the titles I have been able to find relating to Ozzie
Paddlers and are in contemplation of the section "Paddlers of
Australasia" for our eventual Website. Unfortunately I do not own
one of these books..as yet...Please email me to add ones I've missed.
Also interested in titles pertaining to New Zealand paddlers.

Hi PJ
There were a lot of side wheelers and stern wheelers in NZ but I
doubt if things were as formal as the British with plans etc.
A lot of the boats were "adapted" to paddles.
A couple come to mind "Lilly" and (I think)The Delta.
I'll have to start and dig into the archives. I do recall when I was
involved with the School of Mines in Thames (University of the World
in the 1800's for Mining) that there were 38 steamers a day
travelling across the Hauraki Gulf between Thames and Auckland.
There is a painting that I have a photo of somewhere showing a side
wheeler sitting on the mud at Thames unloading supplies.

P J. I have a copy of RIVER BOATS by Ian Mudie. Its a good read and
quite well illustrated. If you like, you can borrow it when you visit

Well, THANK YOU, Walter..much appreciated...in fact I just spoke to
Eddy and one of the ideas is for me to come and visit you guys at the
pond...Planning a trip to the UK in May now.

This leads on from Waves on the Wanganui. Caesar Roose purchased
some of the boats (Paddlers and screw)from the Wanganui Board
Mrs Thomas is Caesar Roose's Daughter.

I've added it..I think I'll need to open a separate section on Kiwi
Paddlers! I could only find one copy of the book available...a used
copy at $28.00 US!!!

I couldn't find any book called "Waves of the Wanganui" however there
is a title that sounds interesting called "RAPIDS AND RIVERBOATS ON
THE WANGANUI RIVER" by Robert D. Campbell, which is the story of the
development, rise and decline of the riverboats on the Wanganui, and
also Alexander Hatrick who built up a fleet of 19 vessels. It says
the author wrote another book called "CAPTAIN CADELL AND THE WAIKATO
FLOTILLA" but I have been unable to find it listed anywhere.

Yet another book I've come across is called BOW WAVES ON THE WAIKATO
by Graham Vercoe with used copies still available at around
US$10.00..a bit more reasonable than the previous two titles..boy!!
books are expensive in NZ! It's described as a softcover book with 88
pages and "A textual and photographic history of the life and craft
on the Waikato River, showing the river developing as a lifeline as
the area develops with new settlement."

Was there a book you were able to find with references to Dai's
(Powell) "PIONEER" gunboat sternwheeler?
