PS Johann Strauss (Dampfschiff Johann Strauß), Wien
« on: May 23, 2008, 12:23:08 PM »
I was unaware of this one, but a photo appeared in a folio of tram and metro photos circulated by a contact, Klaus Matzka.
He has given me approval to repost here.
It has been a static restaurant for many years, possibly with no boiler or engine: I am googling.
Klaus hints that it may become a floating hotel.

So far:

Lots of boat photos, and some text.  Photos include PS Johann Strauß and PS Schönbrunn.  DDSG organisational structure and activities.
It seems that the boat was still cruising between Wien and Linz in 1996.

Paintings and pen & ink sketches of lots of paddleboats, from the DDSG's company artist.

AFAIK: DS is dampfschiff, and doesn't distinguish propulsion
DFS: dampffernschiff, express (= long-distance), and doesn't distinguish propulsion

JOHNANN STRAUSS was constructed after the war, using the hull of the GREIN (1853) and the superstructure of JOHANN STRAUSS (1913). She was withdrawn in 1972 after her paddle shaft fractured, and has been in Wien, on the Donau-Kanal near the Schwedenplatz used as a dance-cafe since the early 1980s. Her engine and boiler were removed before this

Hi PD's.....and Alistair quotes......

after her paddle shaft fractured  :hammer :hammer :hammer

Certainly not questioning the report....but  :thinking..how does a paddle shaft fracture or fail?

Only to guess  :nono that the shaft could have been a forging for the original 1853 vessel & in those earlier days post forging NDT was not applied.....like ..how does a 4" diameter shaft fracture or shear?
