The reason for the varying lengths given for the "Comet" is probably because
she was lengthened by about 20 ft, at the same time as the twin sets of
paddles were removed and single ones fitted. The engraving in my book is of
her in her twin paddle form, where it is stated that she was 42 feet long
and 11 feet broad. It says and I quote..." had been lengthened by about 20
ft......" and you can get anywhere up to approx 60 ft. I don't think they
were too hot on keeping "As Built" records in those days.
All the pictures in my book show her with a large square sail set, as well
as the paddles churning. Maybe it is some artistic licence or her quoted
speed may well have been with a following wind!!
A note in my book says that the crew consisted of 8 hands, including a
piper!! They had not invented the steam operated siren at that time, so I
guess he must have been taken along as a safety measure!!
