A question for Stuart Badger (PS Reliant) or any other PD who would like to comment

Stuart - in the DRG 4531 noted below it is clear that the paddle blades major placement
diameter is inboard of the outer rim of the wheel - now this could be considered necessary
to protect the blades from contacting with submerged junk, but the blades clearly protrude
outboard of the frames so the blades could be hit or damaged by the same submerged junk

So the question is, were there any wheel versions that had blades protruding beyond the
major diameter of the wheel rim?

Hi derek

The answer to your question is yes. With the advent of steel for
construction giving more rigidity for less weight builders dispensed with
the outer rim. Many of the later diesel tugs had single rim paddle wheels. I
am sending you a private attachment - a line drawing of a single wheel
modern paddle wheel.
