Fitz, I'm nit picking here, but would it not have been Ardenadam before the war, and not Ardnadam. I seem to recall seeing that somewhere but can't think where!    Sandy

Yes, you could be right, I have seen it spelt both ways, but it seems to be "Ardnadam" nowadays...I will see if I can find out when it changed.
Its a bit like "Row" changing to "Rhu" on the Gareloch - confusing but there must be a reason for it!!

On "Society of Antiquaries of Scotland" documentation, dated 1908/9, the spelling is "Ardenadam".

Here's a rare destination board from a steamer charter on WAVERLEY in 1970's and I was there!

The railway companies always used the spelling Ardnadam, but my great-great-grandmother had a house in Sandbank, and when she later got a house built in Melrose for my great-grandparents, she called it Ardenbank, a combination of Ardenadam and Sandbank.

Going back to Jeanie Deans, in the early BR era when she had the black dining room windows, she had two gold lines along the hull just below the white of the superstructure.

Hi that's great detail, when you say just below the superstructure do you mean gold bands high on the hull (on the White section ) or two gold bands on the black part of the hull?


On the attached pic you can just make out what i think is 2 gold bands on the upper part of the black section of hull is that what you mean?

I'm sure the 2 gold lines changed to yellow at some point in the 50s before they were dropped from the livery. Can't remember where I read this but I put yellow lines on my Caledonia, see pic. Sorry not very good image but only one I could find!!

The gold bands were on the black part of the hull. Waverley has had one or two gold lines in various years under preservation, in fact she still has two.
