In Model Boat magazine of March of last year there was an article about using 5% glycol by volume in the boiler
      to make the exhaust steam more visible. Has anyone tried this and if so to what success

If you go to there forum there is a discussion on it. As I stated there I don't think it is a good idea.

Glycol is not nice stuff when vapourised. It will cause renal failure when ingested and severe alergic reactions, skin irritation and breathing difficulties - of course you wouldn't drink it - but I wouldn't want to breath it in either, and I speak as a smoker! If you do a google search on 'Glycol - Hazards' I think you will agree.

That was what I had decided too. The best "Steam Effect" is a non-condensing engine setup with the exhaust piped up the stack and a frosty day.
