Derek,
The cassette recorder was a Phillips portable and the motor is a 6volt Canon
with the following numbers on it CB35 - R24CN Made in Taiwan U19 and I am using a
belt drive and pulley system from the recorder.It runs very very quietly.
You could probably pick up a unit from a local junk sale or trash and treasure
sale as I have been told this type of motor is just about standard in most brands of
these recorders.

As Peter says, these are great little motors. Their flattish profile,
low current draw and belt drive which makes 'em whisper quiet are
excellent for paddlers . Not loads of torque, but certainly enough
for a smaller model. I run across old casette decks frequently in
estate clearances, household auctions, and particularly thrift stores
like the Salvation Army etc. Try to buy one that no longer records
or plays...ask the "sorters" if they have any broken casette
players...they usually do and will give 'em to you as their only
option is to trash them!

For a mini-model, the same drive motors out of Walkman's, portable CD
players and (ESPECIALLY) old telephone answering machines are PERFECT.

A source of a good "torquey" low-current draw motor is still VCR's
and old printers. They even come with gear heads if you're lucky.
However before dismantling the home VCR, please make sure it's not a
brand new perfectly functioning model which, mistaking it for an old
broken one, one of my kids left in my workshop. A $450 Stereo VCR
sacrificed for a $3.00 model boat motor. My wife wasn't
impressed..and NO!..THAT wasn't the reason for my recent extended
absence from the forum!
