PS Pevensey

Hi All,
It's been some time since I posted anything but I am pleased to say that I have, at long last, made a start on my first paddler. It is going to be a 32ins. LOA P.S. Pevensey. My first question is what size of motor if I go electric, which is most likely at thus stage, I am thinking along the lines of a 380 or 540 at the most. The hull will be 3/4 pine base with 1/16 ply sides and built up structure. The plan I am basing it on is the Port of Echuca Plans series.Any help with photos or links would be greatly appreciated.
Peter Webster:-)
ps. I have just done the initial sailings of the Graf Zeppelin and as nothing looks better than a carrier my next carrier will be one of the Great Lakes vessels.

Peterrr!!!

Welcome back to civilization!!! Great to hear from you again and even
better to have yet another Murray River Paddler on the slipway.
"Pevensey" is a great choice since she is such a celebrity ("All The
Rivers Run" one and two), and how nice it must be to work off a set
of decent plans as I imagine they are and you got hull lines I hope?
(please don't forget to add them into "Eddy's PLANS database). 32"
is a handy size paddler but I'm not quite sure about the scale you've
chosen as, at 111.5 ft. oa, 1/4" scale would bring the model down to
just under 28" and 32" makes her about 1:41.5 (kind of a strange
scale). Have you considered 1:40 or even 1:35 which gives you a 38"
model? In any case, I'm sure you'll be HIGHLY conscious of
weight/stability issues at anything under 40" (why do I sound like a
broken record?)

MY own preference is actually for twins when they existed on the real
ship, but since the real "Pevensey" had (has) only one engine, you'll
probably be better off being "prototypically correct". The handling
advantage of two engines is quite substantial but one engine and a
big rudder works well too and, from what I have seen of Murray River
paddlers, it appears they are quite "healthy" in the rudder
department.

If you are indeed building a 32" model, I'd favour a smaller, slow
revving, high torque motor with a low current draw. Tape recorder
and CD drive motors can work rather well at 6v. The Mabuchi 540 is a
strong engine but you'll have to check the revs (and current draw
under load) so you can reduce to 150-200 revs at the wheels and still
maintain motor efficiency. I also favour belt drives for a number of
reasons I'm sure you're all sick of hearing!

Go to "Google.com" and simply type in "Pevensey Murray River" and
you'll come up with all kinds of hits.

You mean USS "Wolverine" or "Sable"? I think I can get plans
for "Wolverine" or at least put you in contact with a Museum quality
modeler who has already built her.

Keep us posted as plans progress, Peter.

All the best from the "other" Victoria
