Hello to all
Thank you Paul for the very warm welcome. When I realized you are in
Victoria you would be familiar with the paddlewheelers in B.C. I was looking
in a book I have ,Paddlewheels on the Frontier by Art Downs, and found some
sidewheelers in our province the H.B.C., Beaver, 1836 to 1888. The William G
Hunt, 1865 -1870. Another the Yosemite, used on Victoria - New Westminster
run from1883 for 22yrs. What amazes me most is the Lady Dufferin on the
Shuswap Lake around 1876. I knew there were some at the coast but not inland
very interesting.
I will tell you now how and why I got so interested in this model building.
My father worked as a Fireman on several of these sternwheelers from 1917 to
1921. He left his job on the Nasookin to start a bus run in the Kootenays,
this is another story. He had collected many pictures of these ships and I
have added many more.
In the fall of 1984 I decided to do something about building a few models of
them. This is when Bob Turner's book, Sternwheelers and Steam Tugs came out.
This was the perfect source of information for me. About 3 yrs. later I had
the pleasure to meet Bob when he came to Nelson having made several models
already he was impressed. We have been very good friends ever since, and
exchanged much information. I have used the book so much the binding is worn
off.
I will tell more about the MOYIE restoration and my involvement with it in a
later message.
Paul I live 6 miles north of Nelson on the north shore of the west arm of
Kootenay Lake, and Kaslo is 40 miles farther north Kelowna is about halfway
from the coast to here. I don't travel too far with my display, mostly they
are on display aboard the Moyie during the summer. If you or anyone else has
the opportunity to visit this area I would be most happy to show my models
and give you a personal tour of the MOYIE.
I'm most fortunate to have ridden on the last two of them and be this close
to the Moyie itself.
There is much more to say but thats another time.Best regardes Bert.
