Colourful Clyde paddlers

I have recently purchased a neat little book published in 1967 by
Scottish Field Magazine. It contains 23 colour illustrations by John
Nicholson (18 of which which can also be found at:

The books also contains a fleet list of "Vessels in Service on the
Clyde 1900 - 1967" and it does provide a useful snapshot of the
later steamers.

Alistair's excellent book "Steamers of the Clyde - NB and LNER"
introduced me to the LNER (London North Eastern Railway) Grey livery
and I was struck by the fine pictures of "Talisman" (p93) and the
beautiful "Jeanie Deans" (p81).

Virtually all my reference is in black and white so I was pleased to
see the John Nicholson colour illustrations in the little Scottish
Field booklet. On page 26 there is a lovely starboard side sheer
illustration of PS "Juno" in what I imagine is the same grey livery
which Alistair refers to as the LNER colours (not to be confused with
the wartime grey of the Admiralty.) I can't see any reference to
Juno as having been in the LNER fleet except to say her hull was
repainted black in 1923 when she came under the control of the LMS
(London Midland Scottish Railway).

This colour image also appears on the Website I mentioned but it's
too "blue" and gives the wrong impression of the smart grey livery,
so I''ve posted my own scan on our files under
Files > "THE CLYDE PADDLERS" > PS Juno

So my question is..is this PS "Juno" colour image a correct
representation of the LNER grey? Were there other colourful Railway
liveries...Clyde experts...what's the scoop on all this?

Another deviation from the traditional black hulls of the Clyde
paddlers is a great Nicholson illustration of the gorgeous
little "Madge Wildfire" with a bottle green hull! She's on p14 of
the Scottish Field booklet and WHAT a model this would make!

Again I've scanned her and she's also in the files under (what
else) "Madge Wildfire" (I love that name which conjures up all kinds
of warmly remembered romantic images of Scottish lasses!!).

Now FINALLY, and no scan on this one at the moment, there are two
Nicholson illustrations (p8 "Ivanhoe" and p18 "Duchess of Hamilton"
which clearly depict the saloon deck enclosures as being painted in
(hold on!!) PINK! Is this possible as, if so, this would make for
stunning models.

Are there any other ACCURATE colour references I can locate that
would assist modeling of Clyde paddlers which deviate from the
tradional black hulls?

JUNO wasa Glasgowe and South Western railway steamer; their colours
(1891-1922 were grey hull and red back-topped funnel.
There were three Railway Companies pre-1923 with steamer fleets on the
Cklyde, the North British, Caledonian and Glasgow and South Western. The
latter two will be covered in fuutre books in my series, to be publsihed
later this year.
