Tx and Rx replacement batteries - experience please
« on: June 15, 2005, 06:08:15 PM »
I went to the local hobby shop and asked costing for a replacement set of Ni cads for 20 year old
Futuba FP-T4L r/c set and was quoted just under AUD $100.00

RX = 4 x1.2V = 4.8V and TX = 3 x 1.2V = 3.6V, so for $14.28 per AA cell I think it is over top
irrespective of the case they may be wrapped in - I still have my RX battery case Pt No NR-4C
and the TX batteries with one dummy were all wrapped in heat shrink lived in the back of the
transmitter

Tonight I have opened two old Ericcson mobile packs and found eight AA cells 1.2V NiMH

My only point of real concern is that the Ni-hydride cells had a generous coating of acid gunk on
the end caps and I have split the interconnecting fusion welding plates

From memory it is OK to use soft solder joints on these type batteries provided that there is no
high current draw, and secondly the Ni-hydride cells are less susceptible to memory effect
than the Ni-cadmium cells, & will charge up & fully drain a few times before use

Considering the $100 offer I will reuse the Ni-hydride cells etc, but is there anything
I should be aware of? - all comments greatly appreciated

regards Derek

PS - sorry about the displacement comments - I think it must have been the wild Australian
mushrooms on Jasmine rice next the the hunk of beautiful Australian Barramundi fish

Derek,
I have stopped using nicads for this very reason. If you have a "REJECT "shop near you
they have 1.5v alkaline batteries in AA at 12 for 7dollars or 4 for AUD 2.50. I have used them
without any problems for 2 years now.

Hi Derek,

I always use a compnay in the UK called Overlander. They do almost
ever cell and pack type you could possibly want, and their prices are
extremely competetive.

They have a secure server for placing orders, and they will mail
anywhere in the world.

To take a look, visit www.overlander.co.uk

Thanks Peter - I have all the r/c gear but cannot firnd the instructions and
do not remember
using any 1.5V batteries being used by others twenty years ago

Is there any problem running the RX on 6V and not the 4.8V etc - regards
Derek

There's no problem running an Rx on 6 volts Derek, most of mine use 6
volts, but DO NOT exceed that voltage or you'll blow your receiver.

You can also run a Tx on up to 12 volts, but again DO NOT exceed 12
volts or you'll suffer the consequences!

BTW, did you take a look at the Overlander website?

Thanks Peter - the reason I reverted back to genuine Erickson batteries was
that the
no name versions would not hold a charge, so the supplier provided a full $
credit
on the Ericksons and they were fine until the phone died, so at this stage I
think I will
persue on with the Erickson NiMH batteries, and also how do I determine when
the disposable should be disposed of?

Thanks Eddie - interestingly in the wiring loom going into my old Futaba RX
case has 3 wires (I think I can sort out the red & black) but don't remember
what the grey wire was soldered to - could it be the case element of a
battery
or all four batteries to stop intereference??

The old Futaba power supply (model 202) is a dual RX & TX charger - although
the plug receptical inside the TX has only a red & black wire connections
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I think one of the advantages we have with using rechargeables with TX & RX
is that we can leave them switched on for two or three days and let them
fully discharge their voltage. Where as appliances (phones or walkmans
say - I need 6.0 volts - but if you go below eg., 4.2V I will shut down on
low power - so the battery thinks it's only useful potential is 1.8V - hence
the start of memory problems

If anyone could offer comment or on the grey wire it would be appreciated
regards Derek

Derek,
Re your query on the third wire on the old Futaba set you have, the best person to
contact on this is at Niddrie Hobbies in Niddrie, Victoria and the phone number is Melbourne (03)
9331-0656 and ask for Adrian as he use to be the main servicing agent for Futuba in Victoria.
Peter Webster :-)
