Some interesting models I found in Berlin Technik Museum.
The first german steamboat was "Princessin Charlotte von Preussen", a center wheeler in service 1816 - 1821. Second steamer "Courier" connected Berlin - Hamburg from 1817 to 1821. The "Prinz Carl", first iron steamboat made 1834 - 1837, was a misconstruction because of her poor engines. The "Luitpold" of Lake Chiemsee was in service 1887 to 1969, her compound engine of 180 is on display. look at the very thin iron sheets of hull planking. The models are made in scale 1 : 50

Last two pictures are my steam driven models of "Courier" and "Prinz Carl" in 1 : 25.

Some absolutely examples of paddle engineering history here Thomas....thanks for sharing

We see a pair of small pitch 20mm? pitch duplex chain drives off the paddle shaft...maybe 2.5:1 increase?...the pinion close-by the engine slightly larger in diameter, so also a different ratio]

If the drives were an identical ratio, I would think for a demonstration of engine turning gear ....we see that one of the cylinder endcaps is open, so the engine could not be pressurised

I don't believe this duplex chain was available at the build date of 1843
