But being ignorant about steam I have to ask: Where is the exhaust?

I can see how the slide valve admits the steam but I can see no obvious exhaust route.
All I can see is water dripping from the open end of the cylinder - presumably from steam getting past the piston.  The glass support for the slide valve appears to be rod & not tube.

Not intended as any form of critisism (far from it) - just curious.

Between 1:24 and 1:36, you can see a small oblong orifice on top of the valve chest. That's the exhaust.

That is fantastic. I tried making a glass cylinder and piston years back, could not get it right. Ether it was too loses a fit and leaked or the piston sized in the cylinder.
