PDF into hard copy
« on: November 19, 2014, 10:48:31 PM »
Hello all,
I'm fairly new to all this stuff, I am building at the moment three model boats (I like to keep busy) and the first being near completion I am looking for another project. Now, the thing is, I have been offered a PDF copy of the plans and build article for "Duchess of Fife" from the Model Maker plans and don't know how to get this to a hard copy for the bench in the work area.

Any help or suggestions would be fantastic, also it would be good to meet up with anyone local to me.

If you have Adobe reader on your computer simply double click on the file and when it opens click on print and you'll have a have copy printed.

Hope this helps.

Damien.

It would if I had a printer Damien, but alas I have not, this would be all on A4 sheets of paper though would it not, a bit messy for me.

I was really asking how to get it on a large sheet so I can measure bits and bobs easily, would a local Print place do it for me do you think .

Our local print shop (Yellow pages etc) printed plans for me.  I went in with a big plan and they scanned it to a PDF file which they put on a flash drive supplied by me and then printed another another full size copy.  The cost was about £8 last year.  So presumably if you copy the PDF file to a flash drive and take it to your local print shop they could print it for you.
Warning:  Check the full size of the print, phone the shop and ask them the max size they can do and how much.  Max size was about 814mm x 10metres)
The first place I went to couldn't do it and suggested taking it to another establishment which they reconned would cost £50+  (Needless to say, I didn't).

Hope that helps.

troutrunner.....there is no super quick fix here

1. have the .PDF file printed or plotted out by a 3rd party...it will probably be on an A4 sheet
2. take the sheet home and then measure the hull length between perpendiculars as per the print
3. determine your desired length of vessel and then record the % increase in hull length between perpendiculars  you require
4. as others have suggested, take the same .PDF file to a Copy Shop....do not use the word scale ......but the % increase you require
5. remember the paper plan is two dimensional.....length & breadth....
6. explain to the copy shop person you need the plan enlarged by the same XYZ % in both length and breadth

You would be amazed at how different people interpret non specific requests  :a102 ..... Derek

I think I have sorted it, my local "Print Shop" has looked at the PDF and I think what he said in the email back was was a good result.

I will keep you all informed

The original plan size apparently was 55 x 28 inch according to a printer local to me, the overall length of the vessel is 54 inches, quite big then, I think I will get a copy done and see what it looks like.............
