New to Paddlers.

Hi All,

I have several hobbies, I have a few classic cars, Austin A30 being my usual mode of transport. I also brew my own full grain mash beers, collect all sorts of carp, Automobilia and general adverting stuff.

Fairly new to model boats although I have had the plan of MFV Eileen for many years, I have started this twice in the past and for some reason never got very far with it. It was suggested that the best thing to do would be to buy a kit which would be a quicker build, this I did and it is nearing completion. Problem I found was that a lot of time was spent waiting for glue to dry etc. so I started  building Eileen along side the kit and then had nothing to on either, waiting for stuff to dry so started another boat/ship a "Great Lakes Freighter".

My reason for joining here is because I will need another project very soon and I like a challenge, so I thought a side paddler would be good, the type I want to have a go at is the type of ship that was uses for Atlantic crossings, well I thought this would be the place to ask where to buy some plans.

Well, first off, if you switch to cyanoacrylic glues you'll cut down on the wait time. @nd, we'd all love to find plans to the ocean-going paddlers, but to tell the truth, commercial sets for ocean-going paddlers are as scarce as hens teeth.
There are several places in the UK for plans,

this being one of them. You'll find some paddler plans here that appeared in Model Boats magazine over the years, there are also some in downloads section on this board (see restrictions)
The University archives in Glasgow, The City Archives in Glasgow both have paddler plans,  (There is a list on this site of the plans available)
Taubman Plans in the USA,

in Germany has some plans of paddlers--mostly  European lake paddlers.
and the  Great Lakes Historical collections at Bowling Green State university where you are more than likely to find something similar to what you want, but you will first need some ship names . They have the seeandbee and  a number of others. Microfilm is 70$ USD and they can also print hard copy.

Taubman's has the plans for the Confederate blockade runner which was ocean-going.
There is also a   Mamoli kit of L'Orenoque , a french paddler of mid-1840's  about 3 feet long. and the  Revenue service paddler Harriet Lane kit by Model Boats which was also later a Confederate blockade runner and ocean going.

Thanks for the information greateastern, I'll follow your leads up and see what I get.

The Name of the ship in the photy is the Wyanoke, I have been told it was the second to last side wheeler to be in service on the open seas, does anyone know if that is actually correct.
