I'd like to personally welcome David Allinson to Paddleducks.
David is retired and lives in a small village in Spain (idyllic or
WHAT!) and is currently looking for a good British sidewheel Tug
subject to model. He's really interested in some of the "clinker or
lapstrake" hulls of the older wooden steam tugs and is deriving his
inspiration from the book "British Steam Tugs" by P.N.Thomas.
Let me quote from David's recent emails to me:
"I have been reading the book "British Steam Tugs" by PN Thomas. I am
much attracted to the older clinker built wooden hulled tugs. If you
can lay your hands on a copy, then typical examples of the type of
tug that I would particularly like to model are the "Moselle" or the
"Sir George Elliot" on page 29.
If someone in your group has first hand experience of actually
constructing a clinker hull about 36" to 40" long, then I would be
very glad to be put in touch."
(David Powell in Victoria, are you listening?..you've built a couple
of fine clinker hulls of this size!)
"Do you happen to know of any useful books on the subject? The thing
about the clinker tugs is that they appear to be fairly narrow
relative to their length. They also seem to have quite flowing
lines. The bows look OK but they mostly seem to have rather elegant
counter sterns, which could be a little tricky!! I gather from the
"Model Boat" magazine that if you soak the wood in ammonia for a
while, it becomes very pliable, and is a better way than trying to
steam the wood. Apart from that I don't know anything never
having built one!!! To build one of these things from scratch is big
commitment and I will not be making up my mind, until I have all my
options on the table."
David, we'll also put you in contact with another Yahoo!Group who has
over 700 members all building wooden ship models!!
"I have recently sent off for all three sets of drawings that are
available on the Nexus plans service site. ( "Chieftain", "Iona"
and "Forceful".)"
You have my vote on "Forceful, but then everybody knows WHY that is!!
"I really do need all the advice and encouragement that I can get on
this subject"
Well, you're in the right place for encouragement!
David is about 60% through his current model ship project which is a
modern tug kit, the "Yorkshireman" by Model Slipway. He's added fully
functioning bow thruster, fire hydrant (monitor), lights etc etc. He
also builds R/C model aircraft and regularly races R/C cars, so he's
obviously no slouch when it comes to remote control mechanics.
So once again welcome to Paddleducks, David, and we look forward to
hearing from you as your paddler project evolves!
