Hi from South Australia
« on: June 27, 2013, 10:09:40 PM »
Hi all. My name is Herbie and I live in Hallett cove South Australia. I spent my working life as a telephone technician and now retired I enjoy making classical guitars and model steam engines. I came across this forum and thought why not combine my woodwork and metal work skills to build a paddle steamer as seen on the river Murray not far from me. Any advice on how to get started greatly appreciated.

Hi PD's.......& welcome Herb........please take the time to read our archives on OZ paddlers, purchasing a pre-drawn set of plans for $50 or $60 from Float a Boat will be money well spent ......Derek :beer

Hi Derek. Thanks for the warm welcome and reply. I did have a look at the Float a boat site and they do have some fine plans indeed. Unfortunately they do not include any construction details and being a total newbie I shall have to study up on construction, planking and sealing etc. looking forward to my first build.

Herb....don't be put off by the Float a Boat on line catalogue as the actual plans are highly detailed & comprise

Shear elevation [frame spacing]
Hull sections [frame profile]
Full side elevation detail
Full FWD & AFT end elevation detail
Full 1/2 sectioned plan view
They are also drawn in such detail that you can use the actual timber sizings straight off the plans
A little study & thought on the plans confirms every needed construction requirement is provided .,..naturally wood working experience is needed.....but if you are capable of hand building classical guitars you will be capable to build a hull from such a plan set

I have recently purchased the plans for PS Adelaide & had them increased from 1:24 [as drawn] to 1:20 & commenced a material take off to complete the build

Following are a few images from the FAB plans for PS Adelaide......Derek :goodluck

Thanks again Derek. Yes the info in the catalog did put me of but your post has restored my confidence. I am thinking about ordering the Emmylou plans and will post pics of my progress.
Thanks again
Herbie
