Stuart Turner ST Engine not working ?
« on: March 17, 2013, 04:16:10 AM »
Hi ,

I have an early after 1929 Stuart Turner St Oscillating, double action steam engine,
I have cleaned the ports on the main block, and ran air through , to confirm that they are not blocked,
I have cleaned the inlet and out let on the piston, reset the timing, and she will not run, used ( a good head of steam) no steam leaks from the head, ? etc, when I turn the flywheel, there is no pressure ?

conclusion  " I think I need a new piston ? any ideas welcome.

many thanks,

Have you applied air to one of the cylinder ports to see if it is passing through to the other? If it is have you checked to see if there is packing/Oring on the piston?

Gerald.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, here's a pic of the piston, " this is packing" I'm not sure if this , considered OK or not.

I can not tell from the photo as to whether it is packing or an O ring, but looking on Stuart Models they list an O ring as a spare part. http://www.stuartmodels.com/part_cat.cfm?cat=14
So I would try replacing it.

Gerald.

Hi Gerald,

Thanks for your link, I have now order the Stuart O'ring, so I'll try replacing the old one, that, , looking closer at the piston, " it looks like packing which is slightly thin, ie you can see the brass walls of the piston, where the packing should be. it should be more level or slightly above the outside of the piston, I guess to achieve a tight fit ? if you take my drift. I have also order some ptfe packing too. !!!

thanks again
