Side wheel steamer with sail "Swift"
« on: May 04, 2012, 04:04:00 PM »
Dear members,

For my possible next project I'm looking for information (drawings, pictures,..) about side wheel steamers with sails.

My project’s name is "Swift". Wikipedia says the following: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_yacht)

Swift, wooden sailing smack built in 1803 at Bridport by Booles & Good, not registered. Unknown owners at Leith in 1804 - documents missing.
Converted to a paddle steamer, described as a steam yacht, and registered by T. West, H. Bellingham, E. H. Creasey & others of Brighton on 21 August 1822 at Shoreham, 106’5” x 23’1” x 10’8”, 143 tons. They ran her as a ferry boat Brighton-Dieppe.
She was sold to G. Crichton, R. Ogilvie & others in Leith in February 1824. Crichton & Ogilvie were well-known managers or brokers.
She was sold to H. Templer in London in September 1827 and finally to Turkey in October 1828 when she became the Sultan's steam yacht Surat, later taken in to the Ottoman Navy as its first steam vessel.

There are detailed drawings/plans of Swift(Sürat) which I have got from "Kunt Model Muzesi" http://www.kuntmodelmuzesi.com/. I have been in contact with them. There are no technical Info about the ship so the drawings are only reconstruction. I've studied the drawings. They are very detailed but many points seemed to me dubious.

I could not find Information specific to that ship. So I'm looking for detail information about similar ships of the same type from that period. My Intention is to be familiar with this type of vessels and also with the period which I find to be very interesting. Besides this also to check the drawings and if neccessary to improve.

Searching for Info I have bought the book "Paddle Warships"

For the rigging I have bought "Masting and Rigging" by Underhill. Not specifically steam ships but the rigging of the period are covered thoroughly. Can be usefull.

I have also bought the drawings "Le SPHINX - Paddlewheel corvette".

Apreciate any hint about supplemental sources of information.

Hi Ilhan

Interesting subject and I wish you luck in your search.

Recently I put out a request for anyone who owns 'Paddle Warships' to let me know if contains any kind of plan/info on 'HEIC Nemesis'....I wonder if you would be kind enough to take a look for me...thanks.

I will probably buy this book too but am waiting to see if I can put it to immediate use at it is quite expensive.

I love your gallery of models and congratulate you on the high quality of your workmanship...an inspiration!!

Thanks for your extremely useful books/references.

Cheers.........Bernie

Hi Bernie,

Thank you very much.

I've not read the book word by word yet but I've looked over all the drawings and pictures. No Nemesis.
Also checked the various lists of vessels. Unfortunately Nemesis not mentioned.
Will check it again.

Hi Ilhan

Thanks very much for taking the trouble to look...it is much appreciated.

I will look forward with keen interest to your build as I too had considered buying the plans you refer to as an aide, or even an alternative to Nemesis.

Many thanks again.

Bernie

There is  a new World Ship Society CD with all British steamships to 1840. It has details from the Registers in the National Archives and full history of each steamer

Ilhan, the Savanah was built in 1809 and might provide useful information. there is also the Beaver, and early paddler that might be useful. I have the book by McKay with drawings. Can email or pm if you wish.
Thanks too for the link to the  model museum. There are a number of paddler models in their collection that might be of interest to members here and also  two plan sets  for paddlers: Bagdat Basra Halep, and Izzzeddin (1865) which is illustrated in the Ottoman Steam navy by Guleryuz.
