Flying Scotsman colors??
« on: January 10, 2012, 05:22:48 AM »
I asked about color scheme a long time ago and didn't "hook" any response.... So I am back

In this picture I see three separate colors-

One faint water line anti-foul color ( it could be a reflection I suppose)

then the main hull

then a lighter color at the bottom of the sponsons including gunwales and progressing up.

Does any body know what this and other paint work look like?

??Rust( primer red) for anti-foul

Black hull??

Rust against for to balance

I would like to be true in my color selections and would truly appreciate input from this learned group

Thanks folks

Hi,
Perhaps Andy ( Marine mole) can help more than me as i think  Lachie Has a Flying Scotsman??

Anyway there is a very small waterline model in the Dunoon museum .. pic attached bellow.

Funny you should bring her up as a subject as i was looking at her plans a few weeks ago.

Regards
Kim

Thank you very much!! That is a step in the right direction. The water line diorama also showed me another detail I failed to notice... the "gaps" in the gunwales all along ...Maybe true openings or just banding to add to "company colors" identification by customer ships

Is Marine Mole and  "Lachie" the same person? I will PM either one or both.  I am rebuilding this paddler I bought from a site member to be as close a copy to the Flying Scotsman as I can

Here is a shop shot as I add superstructure details ( now a long way from Wales to live here on the West Cost of the US)

Marine Mole is the long suffering unpaid publicist for Lachie the builder. Lachie is computer illiterate.

Will check with Lachie what info and sources he has and get back to you.

Now I'm not 100% on this but i do recall the colour scheme and actual / simulated openings are to give the impression that there are cannons (guns ) on board  and that the breaks in colour (orange) are the locations of the guns.
My problem is that personally guns and boats shouldn't mix .. grey boats ... no interest here...
So unfortunately i forget where i read that.

Is Marine Mole and  "Lachie" the same person?

Some times i wonder :)
Either way they make a good team.

Kim

The Clyde Shipping Company colour scheme remained fairly constant right up until they ended tug ownership in the late 90's. If you type in Flying Phantom, Flying Childers, Flying Spindrift or Flying Fulmar into google images you may find some good modern pictures of the tugs showing the scheme including the orange line with black painted gun ports and white line.

Thank you all - the "fake" gun ports trade dress is easily seen  and understood.  Now one one more small question and sorry to press my luck..

I see :
a light grey anti-foul below water line
a Red gash across the bow
Then black
Gunwales are a light primer red / brown- topped - a stripe and topped with black
Superstructure is a darker red/ brown primer color in my eye

What color is a deck on this era tug? Mine is now a faded rusty barn red. As I am doing many changes- I might as well get that color done too if it is different by any significant degree. I have never see na deck in color on any older paddle tugs- perhaps its doesn't matter

I am going with a solid black stack..

Thank you all again

I read that some old decks were covered in a green colored cork and asphalt mix -- was that well after this era boat ( 1898)??? ..some word that I forgot to write down--started with a "C"??

So was my deck this green color do you think or was it grey or some such?

Thank you in advance

Hi PD's.....Mo...it is difficult to guess the actual colour scheme from old Sepia or B&W images

:thinking ...I would be inclined to visit a maritime museum  :picknose ...look & photograph models tugs from the same era/period.....then short list one or two colour schemes that "look best" to you

Print them out in a colour printer...........look at both images for 24 hours....have a few  :beer....&  :shhh ...then make your decision

You can always laminate the chosen image ...& if by the pool one day someone asks  :porkies re the colour scheme...you have documentary evidence of the typical build for the era......

Best of luck ........please post a few coloured images when you progress that far........Derek

Very good advise- as these types of boats were not based here- there are no museums to visit- :sobbing  But I do like your reasoning.

The more I look at the brown superstructure photos I have to admit I am not found of the colors at all no matter how accurate they might be or not be for 1898.

The print off a picture and have a beer or two over a few days is wise council.

My deck for now is this dark flat reddish color- unless that is way out of the norm ?- I will stick with it and just add some weathering.

I have to admit that I feel some responsibility to be presenting a Clyde type paddle tug accurately to the West Coast of the US where such boats are rarely if ever seen- I wanted to do it right ..as well as be on guard for when I post here about the re-working of her I did not offend the maritime culture or open my self to ridicule for making some color blunders.... :shoot ( not that any of your are unkind-)

If my ruddy deck color works-- I shall post a start to my re-build and leave this topic alone

Thanks again :beer

Apologies for delay in getting back to you. Have consulted Lachie who says that the vessel was finished in standard Clyde Shipping colours. He says that he has some photographs and if he can locate them I will scan and post here.

This is one of Lachie's older models and is due for a refit. It was also built without the benefit of his extensive personal photo archive of vessels he was interested in. He worked for several years not far from Ferguson Shipbuilders in Port Glasgow and photographed, in minute detail, many vessels during construction and refit. This wealth of information has resulted in outstanding models like the Scotia and the Pharos.

I include two shots of Lachie's Flying Scotsman taken several years ago at Loch Lomond Shores. Apologies for the quality of the second but Lachie tends to sail his boats like MTBs.

Look forward to seeing your finished model.

Andy

:great :great :great and a   BIG :c017

My thanks to Lachie also!!

That sure helps me visualize and determine what to do with colors and detail. Now perhaps I can keep much closer to the Flying Scotsman in tribute- his boat is marvelous in action!! My superstructure is already made with many details not in the right places- but they can be adjusted as time goes by and re-fit is called for.

Lachie's boat is much longer and leaner in hull line than mine - owing to the use of the Mayflower hull--Tell him not to flinch as mine progresses!

I may post the pictures you have here also over in my build thread- so anyone that might come along later can see  what I am aiming for.

And please feel free to post more great photos!!

Thanks again :respect
