Britannia / Vulcan / Kylemore
« on: November 09, 2011, 03:36:23 PM »
Having mothballed my Waverley I've decided to order an Albion hull which I'd like to build it as PS Vulcan. This ship was built by Russell & Co in 1897 and was better known as Kylemore, sister to Strathmore. I've instituted enquiries at all the usual places. So far Strathclyde Records Office (Mitchell Library) and NMM have confirmed they don't have the plans. I'm awaiting a response from Glasgow University, The Ballast Trust and the PSPS.

Does anyone have a copy of a plan for these ships or know of any other sources?

As a fall back I may build the hull as PS Mars 1902. The plans for her are available from Glasgow University Archives.

Models by Design who produce the Albion hull will ship globally - much to their credit. The only downside is that the shipment costs about the same as the hull!

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Richard,

I checked the book "Paddle Steamers" by Richard Clammer, this is on the inside cover....it says the plan is in the authors collection, so he must have got it somewhere. Its quite an old book, reprinted 1983.

( I'm sure a mod. can remove this scan if there are any issues with it being posted here?)

I see the Strathmore was bought by the Admiralty in 1908, maybe there are plans under HMS Harlequin somewhere.

Many thanks Clark,

I've tried to follow up on the Harequin conenction through the NMM but no luck. I think there is a deck plan in GUA so if there is it may be posisble to draw up some plans with this and the elevation here.

Richard

Success! Made it to the Ballast Trust on Saturday and they had found a GA, sectional Profile and paddlewheel drawing. Everything needed to build the boat. Very reasonable at 25 pounds for the copies.

I can't commend the team at the Ballast enough for helping me track down these hard to find drawings. They even opened up specially on Saturday so that I could pick them up.

Thats great, Richard, and I guess you will be doing her in the GSWR livery as the Vulcan...have you got the hull yet?

Yes - Hull has arrived in Singapore but I'm still in the UK!

Plan is to build her as Vulcan in full G&SWR livery.
