New paddler from Devon - which motors?
« on: September 21, 2011, 07:53:42 AM »
Hi
I'm a new member of this site, I have been building R/C model boats for over ten years and have built  a large amount of varied boats from Waverley models Y2k to 40mph fast electrics. I am a member of my local club, Ilfracombe and District Model Boat. I enjoy scratch building and kit building and am currently working on an R/C conversion of the Italeri 1/35 Elco.

I have been looking for something different to build and to this end and have purchased a PS Reliant Hull in 1.48 from Models by design (length 26", beam 5.5"), I have also purchased a set of Graupner paddle wheels (I can probably hear a lot of you groaning now).  I am planning to power the boat with two motors and ESC's through a mixer to give independant paddle control. The only area I'm a bit confused by is motors - I have spotted some on a well known auction site, they are geared and give 300 RPM at 12v, so at 7.2v should provide about 180RPM - will this be too fast and should I look for slower motors or a smaller battery - I prefer to direct drive the paddles rather than drive them via belts or chains. Any suggestions/comments will be gratefully received
Thanks
TJ

Hello TJ,

first a warm welcome from Switzerland to you, nice to have you with us here at Paddleducks.

I have a Glasgow with independent paddle drive, i would recommend pulleys and belt's this allows to mount the motors deeper into the hull this increases the stability and with the pulleys you can reduce the rev's to a suitable amount of around 150 rpm.

Here are photos of my set of motors.

Welcome TJ to our little corner of the web.

Like Hans i would recommend the belt pulley system, here is my setup on the bottom of page 4 http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=4657.45

the key to to get the weight as low as possible.  I chose to have a single drive and am still able to turn in a fairly tight circle. the motors are normally run at 2/3rds rpm at about 120 with the rest in reserve just in case required.

there is no hard and fast rule other than keeping the weight low and the superstructure as light as possible.

all the best with your build and ask as many questions as you wish  :goodluck

Hi
thanks for the info so far - Pee Wee -i see you have graupner paddles, as do I, can you advise what diameter drive shaft you used? I have measured the diameter of the drive bore in the paddle and it seem to be just below 5mm, so I'm thinking a 4.5mm shaft will be about right?

Thanks for that - I manager to acquire some 5mm stainless shaft material from work so I think that's what I'll be using

Please take the advice given above. I use steam in my paddlers and even a slow steam engine needs a 3 to 1 reduction.  Max on a full size ship about 45 rpm. I am also in Devon R.G.Y.

Thanks for all the advice so far - it has been helpful. I have ordered a couple of geared motors, rated at 300 rpm at 12v. I will only be running at 6v so this (in theory) should provide about 150 rpm. I still intend to run with independently operated paddles, hence two motors and speed controllers. I have also ordered some small timing wheels and belts to allow me to mount the motors lower in the hull to improve stability.

Hello & welcome  TJ,
Sorry for the belated reply ... My computer ... for whatever reason has not been allowing me on Paddle ducks.

Reliant will be a great wee model... I have a (1:48) plug for her ..... My Dad was supposed to build her for me when i was about Ten years old after a visit to the NMM & buying the Plans with my Christmas & Birthday money.

You have a challenge ahead of you ... Just keep her very light above the waterline. Oh and please share the build with us.
Regards
Kim
