Favourite Model?

If you had to choose just one model to build, or one that you've already built, what would it be and why? It doesn't have to be a paddler!

My favourite would have to be the Glen Sannox - its the one paddler that I've always thought looks so graceful. It looks fast just standing still. So why haven't I built it? The answer is quite simple, I don't think I could ever do it justice! - So I'd always be unhappy with it

So out of curiousity, what would your choice be? Remember, only one model, and it doesn't have to be a paddler....

Hi Eddy,
Thats a difficult one...I could make a list...but I would say

1. Duchess of Hamilton 1890.....main rival of the Glen Sannox in their early years on the Arran run in summer.

2. After present models are done, next paddler will be Fair Maid 1915 as she would have looked had she survived WW1...Have hull, wheels and loads of plans and quite excited about her.

My all time favorite is the Jeanie Deans in her 1932 - 37 livery.

I can't tell why she is such a beauty (in my opinion), i have a lot of plans from Mitchel Library and so far a home made GRP hull, scale 1:33, 240cm long,this will be my next project after the Bloody Oak is finished.

My favourite would have to be the REDGAUNTLET.some years ago MODEL SHIPWRIGHT published a plan and article and I saw theie 1/48th plan at Maritime Models in Greanwich. Unfortunately I had spent up on books at the Maritime Museum so never bought them!. (I am paranoid about using a credit card- I have hsd a card for 45 yearts and have only used it THREE times). Sadly I have searched in vain for a copy of these plans since then!. Regards, Walter.

I have a copy of the Model shipwright mag (Dec 1978) with the Redgauntlet article, it has a reproduction of the plan over two pages, that could perhaps be used to draw a larger copy. P.N. Thomas wrote the article, but I don't know if he drew the plan.

I have seen 1:48 plans for PS Marmion, but never the Redgauntlet.

I'm going to keep my mouth shut on this one for the moment as last time i answered a similar question i talked myself into a rather big boat and a ton of work lol

Re  Red Gauntlet - I'm pretty sure Phil did do the plans for her in the article.
From the top of my head there are Rigging plans or at least some record of her available in the Langmuir collection held at the Mitchell  Library Glasgow.

She will make a very nice model indeed

Thanks Clark. I have over 100 Model Shipwrights, but sods law, that one is missing from my collection!. Would it be possible to scan the article/plan and email it to me?. it would be helpful if you could. Phil certainly drew the plan as I discussed it with him. Mine would have to be MARCHIONESS OF LORNE which served faithfully on the Holy Loch run until prematurely replaced by motor vessel MAID OF ASHTON in 1953 (now HISPANIOLA on the Thames).

I was born in Strone (hence the email name) and grew up to the sound of her paddle beats.

I built two models of her, no longer in my possession. (see MODEL BOATS magazine for November 1977)

It would have to be the merchant navy class train in 5" scale,

for a boat then the seandbea not that they will ever send me the plans.

mine would be one of these two beauties.

sadly I can find no trace of plans for either of them anywhere........have been searching for them in every conceivable place for just short of 10 years now......been given more leads than Mutley, and absolutely nothing, so unless someone has seen a set with their own eyes......I don't think they exist any more, lol.

Both are Isle of Mann steamers and both are just beautiful.

I'd love a Model of MacBrayne's Chieftain or Claymore. Amazingly some plans for the Claymore do exist but I have yet to find the Chieftain although I have hopes that they may exist.

Phil did draw plans for Redgauntlet and one was built in the mid 90's which I remember in the Steamer Club.

Mercury, presume you mean the old paddle CLAYMORE, as I have built the 1955 version.

Yes - the single screw steamer of 1878. The rigging plan for her is in the "Kingdom of MacBrayne" book.

The 1955 Denny boat makes a lovely model as well. I've seen the pictures of your model Sandy and it looks great.

Of all your models I still rather have the North boats!

well, not quite a model that i posted as a favorite, but i was given this model today, by a dear old friend of a ship i have always loved and admired....she is a real little beauty, and a working model as well.
