Steam Engine For Mountfleet St. Nectan

What engine would be suggested for the Mountfleet St. Nectan. The boat would displace about 45 lbs and is about 66 inches long. A Stuart Twin Launch was recommended with a Maccsteam 5" boiler. Sounds great but I am not a machinist and the Twin Launch is available only as unmachined castings from Sturat. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

As an aside, I have a complete set of the Mantua 1:200 Titanic kits that I would consider a trade for a suitable steam engine. I am in the USA so postage is always a consideration but there are ways to ship and keep the costs down.

Hi PD's......& welcome Iran ......

A 2000 mm model vessel is not a small thing to steam power .......

Both the Japanese Saito & the French JMC publish nominal hull proportions relative to their engines...it is probably a good way to start & consider your options

Here is the Saito listing.....you will find a similar listing for JMC via GOOGLE ...both of these manufacturers have respected names in the model steam industry....keep us posted with your thoughts.....Derek

PM sent regarding your mail to me about my build of the St Nectan. Sorry about the lack of information on steam engines as my version was powered by electric motor, and I've never tried a steam powered craft.

As another PS to your letter above, I too am building the Titanic and could have wished I knew about your offer earlier. 

It's an expensive boat to build eh !!

Thanks for the replies. I guess the question is, of the ready built engines such as the T3DR or the Double D10 or perhaps others which would be the best to reasonably propel a boat of that size. As far as space is concerned, there will be plenty of room for a water tank, large fuel tank, large boiler, etc. The only question is how much power is needed and will any of the available engines to the job.

A great looking boat as large as this deserves an engine that not only does the job but looks the part too. Having used a PM Research V twin I think it would do the job but an inline vertical twin would look much more realistic. We have available here in New Zealand a kitset inline double acting twin cylinder engine of 20mm bore by 20mm  stroke but you would need to find someone to machine the kit. Regards, Ian.

I wish I had the machinists skills, I would love to be able to build steam engines from castings. I think I have settled on an engine for the St. Nectan. I am considering the Saito T2GR. It is quite powerful and is advertised to be used in boats of 1.2 to 3 meters. I will probably match it with a Maccsteam 5 or 6 inch boiler. One attribute of the St. Nectan is there is a lot of room for the workings.

Hi PD's....Iran...I have had no dealings with MacSteam...but from all posted reports both here & @ ModelMayhem....Mike from MacSteam [the owner] is very helpful & good to deal with

It may well be worth your time in discussing your intended engine with Mike to gauge his thoughts as the Saito T2GR will consume  quite a volume of steam....Derek 

BTW....differing WEB sites for Saito resellers have quite a few TYPOS in their Saito engine specification listings 

One WEB page lists the Saito T2GR as 5.4 cc....another 25 cc

Saito,  shows it as a 20mm bore and 20mm stroke and I have to assume they are correct on the size but their displacement calculation is probably off. It could account for the fact that this engine is a lot more expensive that the T2DR which has a 12mm bore and 12mm stroke. It's good that you brought that to my attention. I will continue to research this engine and I will check in with Mike at Maccsteam to discuss boiler selection. Will post my results.

mmmmmmmm PD's.... something so simple can easily be mis-understood or mis-represented

Pi x radius squared x height simple OK? - .....  so now we introduce

1. what is the actual swept volume?
2. do the technical specifications consider the double acting functionality?
3. do the technical specifications consider the return stroke volume is MINUS the rod diameter?  ...Derek

The Saito spec only says it is double acting, bore 20mm, stroke 20mm. Doing the math, it is about 6.3cc per cylinder. I am not sure what double acting actually means. If Saito is correct about the bore and stroke, the total swept volume is 12.6cc for the two cylinders combined. I assume since it is double acting the displacement is 25cc which seems about right.

I made contact with Mike at Maccsteam and it appears that the 6" boiler will do the job very nicely. Running time 20 - 30 minutes. Maybe a little overkill but better to have more running time than not. The boiler is 9" high which is quite large but I assume that I can put the stack of the boiler under the stack of the model. I don't want to unpack the kit as of yet to make a measurement.  Hopefully, someone who has built the St. Nectan can advise me on this.

..... I am not sure what double acting actually means. .....

steam pushes the piston forward, then pushes it back again as opposed to steam pushes the piston forward, flywheel brings it back - as in 'MAMOD' (for example) steam engines

Hi PD's,

It looks like either the Stuart Double 10 or the Saito T2GR. From the vast experience of the PD's which would be preferable. There is an opportunity for a Stuart Double 10 at auction. It is used but has the reversing gear and gearbox so it is inviting. A quick opinion on the choice between the two would be great.

Hi PD's......Iran  ...you ask the impossible from us

If the Double 10 was well built & 1/2 the cost of the other engine it would appear to be a    buy
If the double 10 was 1/2 the cost of the other engine ...but turned out to be a well worn out & poorly machined engine  ...your spent funds may need additional units for you to have the engine repaired     by a competent model engine re-builder

Some 5 years ago I purchased on eBay a 20x20 oscillator completed with Maudsley reversing gear ....it is the greatest heap of junk I have ever purchased.........

It too can be a retirement project for me ....but the reversing gear will go

I would never again purchase a second hand component of this nature without first knowing the actual quality & the manufacturer.......Derek

Well said. No problem bidding on an item the I know that I can deal with if there are problems but not the steam engine. No expertise whatsoever. At least the Saito will be new, and have been tested at the factory so I am at least that much further ahead.
