PV Gypsy Ellen
« on: October 17, 2010, 09:56:52 PM »
As Roderick Smith stated almost 3 years ago, the PV Gypsy Ellen is moored at North (Nor') West Bend (between Morgan and Ramco) in SA.  She is owned by Sue & Kevin Pedder (Ph. 08 8540 3114). It is 9km from Morgan on the Renmark Rd.

Searching in the site's search box in the left-hand menu bar on 'Gypsy Ellen' brings up ten references.
I couldn't find my older photo, but a recent one is attached to
www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3257.msg28301#msg28301
That photo is miscaptioned 'Cadell' which is a few more kilometres upstream than Nor West Bend.

Channel Nine's South Australian Post Card program which went to air yesterday (17/10/2010) featured an article on the Pedder's and their Nor West Bend property and it contained footage of Gypsy Ellen in action. This hyper link  http://www.postcards.sa.com.au/ will take you to the Post Card's web site, on the left hand site tool bar select Nor West Bend Station, this will take you to the feature article and you can play the video of it which includes the Gypsy Ellen out cruising.

That Postcards episode was good, particularly the video clip.  www.postcards.sa.com.au
Keith Conlon is well known at transport events.

I found my earlier photos of SWPV Gypsy Ellen:
www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=2566.msg13479#msg13479

and one  three posts later showing a scan of a magazine photo, before the galvanised-iron sponson cabins were added:
www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=2566.msg13482#msg13482

Linked from the Postcards home page is a set of video clips from past shows.  Four have relevance here:
* A Murray cruise on MV Odyssey.  See www.odysseyrivercruises.com.au.  This boat followed (at a discreet distance) the PS Oscar W centenary voyage, and I did get to meet the captain and go aboard.
* A Torrens cruise on a Popeye.
* Two programs of hire kayaks on backwaters near Lyrup and Renmark

I suspect that paddlesteamers have featured in earlier episodes, but they are not archived (or I haven't found the link).
There is also a link to a Postcards Murray River source to sea exploration dvd.
