Pier models
« on: July 28, 2010, 05:27:04 AM »
Hi,

Just completed my model of Orimdale Pier and wondered if anyone else has Pier Models. I know the guys at the Model Steamer Club have some. has anyone built a working model of one of the iron piers?

Ormidale is a hidden pier halfway up Loch Riddon. It was built in 1856 and last used for scheduled services in 1939. It's still in excellent condition and Balmoral called on a special about 20 years ago.

Hi Mercury,
Very nice, I was round that neck of the woods recently.
I don't have any details, but there is a book suposed to be out soon with line drawings/ depths/ details etc of the Clyde piers.
Often thought about trying to build one of the smaller wooden piers....but will get some steamers floating first :D
Iron piers eg Craigmore I think would be a good deal harder to model...a good challenge!

Clark,

I've got Ian McCrorie's standard tome on Clyde Piers but a book of drawings would be great. Through a friend I have rough plans for Strone & Kilmun and I believe you can get drawings for Lochgoilhead from the Mitchel Library.

Seems to be a wee delay Sandy, Gallimaufry have one show copy as do Bookpoint, but neither have sale copies yet.

Agree is it a good book, approaching the subject  a bit differently from others.

Stewart.

There was one well thumbed copy in Bookpoint ....I will go in tomorrow and have a look and see if there are any in stock, or if any are expected.

These are the model piers that I remember the Model Steamer Club had, at one stage (bad pun not intended) or another:-

Millport, Dunoon, Gourock, Craigendoran, Keppel, Innellan, Largs, Tignabruaich and, I am pretty sure, Wemyss Bay.

The Gourock pier was a monster thing. I remember helping when the club built its first 'room' in the clubhouse at Rouken Glen and it was filled with the piers.

Many of them have disappeared over the years, but the club still have a few I believe.

All the best
Sandy

Hi Guy's

The current list of piers models in the Model Steamer club are Tighnabruich, Blairmore, Millport, Craigendoran, Arrochar and Rothesay. plus a general harbour complex.
Other piers owned by club members are Keppel and Largs .
Hope this helps

Hi All,

On a side note to the model piers discussion, the real Tighnabruiach pier suffered a quite lot of damage last week during a gale, some decking up, & fencing down.

Ian, if the club ever wanted to build a Dunoon pier, let me know, I have some drawings that would help.

Hi Clark ,

I think we met many years ago for I have a copy of a drawing showing  the buildings for Dunoon.  It is on the to do list I have Ian McCrorie's book which has a very small drawing of the pier structure itself. As I recall it you were building a 1934 Caledonia and I think you were looking for the blue Monastral Paint.

I do remember now, Ian, that must have been 1995/96 or so. Small world! The Caledonia ended up black instead!
If you ever go ahead with the pier, i can copy you a drawing with some piling detail of the front face of the pier. I always thought a model of the old single berth Dunoon pier (pre 1897) would be a nice project. the old pier face is still visible from the car linkspan, to this day.

Richard, I had a look for the Firth Piers book, nothing yet I'm afraid, I will do a bit of digging & see what I can find out about its release date.
regards
Clark

Picked up a copy of the Calmac 2011 brochure and while it has the winter Gourock / Dunoon timetable there is no summer 2011 timetable as it states the route is to be retendered. Saturn is also the only streaker on the fleet list. Is anyone aware of what is happening here - the brochure has a bland statement to the effect that the route "May be retendered and hence has been excluded"?

Hi Richard
Saturn is now Dunoon ferry till further notice...Jupiter is in "hot" layup at Roseneath, on the Gareloch, beside the Juno, which has lain dormant there for several years now.
The route is in the process of being tendered, and so has been excluded from the summer 2011 timetable pending any "developments"...any new service should be starting next summer but I'm not holding my breath...in a nutshell, no one seems to know yet what will happen, and the clock is ticking down! >:(
