Sir Walter Scott

At Loch Katrine recently and took yet more photographs of the Sir Walter Scott. Not a preserved paddler hence the posting here. Points of interest were the ice still in the bay where she is moored and the new mast being stepped when I arrived. Went for my constitutional and the job was finished on my return.

It has to be said that the new superstructure is fairly hideous but, having sailed on the vessel in mid summer Baltic conditions, I can understand the reasoning behind it. The bulk of passengers will be 'normal' tourists and not steam freaks and will not be prepared to suffer for authenticity. Personally I preferred the option of resorting to a stiff Irish coffee from the bar.

The SS. Sir Walter Scott was to be my Dad's final model but unfortunately Parkinsons stopped all building a little prematurely.
However in remembrance  i have the plans & decided to add this model to the initial range I'm hoping to produce
At a scale of 1:24 she will be a great boat for a steam Plant.

Not sure what Mr. Denny would make of the new superstructure ...... Although I'm sure he would appreciate the function ...

Another reason for wanting to model her is that i used to work with the engineer (Malcom) great guy and very talented in my opinion.
Myself and Malcom used to run the Maid of the Tay ... fiberglass Starfish boat in your pics . Great fun and sure beat working for a living! The most noteable trip i ran was one Jan 15th.. the Salmon season opening when a group of fishermen hired her for a fishing trip on Loch Tay.. Anyway the weather was so rough the party disbanded at lunch time due to sea sickness .... personally i was loving it ... Ah halcyon times....

Nice photos. Doesn't she run on biofuel now? I have to agree the superstructure isn't the nicest, but then at least the ship is still sailing.

you chaps are being far too polite........the new fore cabin is possitively hideous. it has spoiled some lovely lines of a graceful ship, and reminds me of the lash ups i used to see on old converted ship's lifeboats whilst cruising the canals on my narrow boat....lash ups that were made with little thought, feelings for the esoteric lines and almost always a penny pinching  exercise.......yes, when i get round to building the boat it'll be without that hideous monstrosity at the fore end.

Both the earlier shots would make nice models, but if I had to sail on her in inclement weather I would go with the latest version.

It would, in my opinion have been perfectly possible for a naval architect of the meanest talent to design a snug, warm cabin in keeping with the the age, design and ethos of the ship.
The current 'Deck shed' is the most blatent example of penny pinching vandalism I have seen perpetrated on a classic vessel for as long as I can remember.
The current owners do not deserve to be allowed to own a second hand park pedalo - let alone this ship.

there's plenty of room in inclement weather either down below or aft of the engine room skylight.
but when you are watching that beautiful steam engine chattering away from above, you forget the inclement weather anyway, lol..i certainly do.

Oh dear! seem to have opened a can of worms about the 'modernisation'

I agree the ship would make a fantastic model and I have always had a notion to start one but I would probably never finish it. I have a soft spot for Denny ships as both my father and grandfather worked in the yard.

Over the years I have regularly photographed the ship and present a further selection of the ship in the Halcyon days of coal firing. Hope this isn't overkill.  I won't mention the superstructure.

There was an article about her in the Steam Boat Association magazine late last year...they needed it on the upper deck for wheelchair access or something. But I don't see why it needs to look like it does.
And the wheelhouse looks dreadful too.
