PS Unterwalden and Neuchatel
« on: February 01, 2010, 07:41:25 AM »
Hi all,

Hans has been on one of his trips again, today he sent me the following photos....

I quote from his message:
Quote
yesterday i visited the PS Unterwalden at the shipyard at Lucerne. The steamer is there for a complete rebuild to prepare her for the next hundred years. We could see the main deck area with out all the furniture and decorations with new deck planking and a few engine parts.

Later we could see another engine prepared at the SGV shipyard for the rebuild of the steamer Neuchatel at the Lake Neuenburg, and we saw the wheels, or better we saw the remaining parts, i can't understand what these barbarian have done. See the photos and you will understand it.

Hi PD's.....& Hans says.... "i can't understand what these barbarian have done" .....

Sometimes for what ever reason :shhh  a shaft may need replacing....& it is quicker to use the RED spanner so then possibly to a horizontal borer to collapse the stub shaft from the wheel hub......

But anyway  :kewlpics Hans ....Derek

Thanks for the pictures, Hans. Is Unterwalden due back in service in 2011?

Hi PD's,

when PS Neuchatel was withdrawn from service she was converted into a restaurant, to create more space for storage or what ever they removed and scraped the engine and cuted away half of the paddlewheels. The Trivapor has bought the steamer and want to save and rebuild he for service on lake Neuenburg Switzerland. The engine you see from one of the Bavarian paddlesteamers it was replaced by an diesel - hydraulic engine and was stored some where in Netherland. The Trivapor bought this engine also because it has the right size for the PS Neuchatel.

The PS Unterwalden should be back in service in 2011, there is another visiting day planed for November.

I keep you up to date as far as i can, regards Hans

Neuchatel's new engine is from the Ludwig Fessler on the Chiemsee in Austria, and the steam engine was placed in a museum.

With Unterwalden are they rebuilding the upper-deck foward saloon and making the top of the wheelhousue go down into the bottom half instead of all the wheelhouse going into thesaloon?

Here are some photos I took of Neuchatel in August...

I would imagine if the ship has been converted for use as a restaurant and the engine was removed to provide more space, they didn't expect the shafts to be used again but wanted the bit that holds the wheels on to remain in place.... so they just cut off the inside ends
