New Moderation of PD's ....October 2009
« on: October 26, 2009, 09:22:49 PM »
Hi PD's........I refer to the following posting from our moderators ......originally referencing PS Ryde.....

'This topic has been moderated and will be under supervision to prevent the recurrence of any disparaging remarks.
If anyone has any problems with this then please contact the moderators'

This comment if I may suggest in a most humble way ...does not provide any understanding to the point in question as the subject matter has been ...'in most parts' removed by moderation

We members provide posting input not only to ask for assistance, but to offer comment of our own experiences in the hope that they may assist newer younger members who hopefully ask questions...afterall that is what I hope we senior members are here for  :hammer

Simply saying.....

'This topic has been moderated and will be under supervision to prevent the recurrence of any disparaging remarks.
If anyone has any problems with this then please contact the moderators'

To me ...this is illogical ............Derek  :coffee

Derek,
there is little point in moderating a thread to remove disparaging or insulting remarks and leaving them in so members know why the thread was moderated. Unfortunately most of the content of the original thread was inflamatory. It is our opinion that the thread contributed nothing in the way of knowledge or advice apart from what remains.

Can I ask that you respect our decision - unfortunately sometimes one is damned if you do and damned if you don't - this is one of those situations. If you have any concerns about the moderation or any other aspect of the Admin - do please send us a personal message and we'll get straight back to you.

The moderators.

Stuart

To be honest, although this is a forum mainly for model making, it is also a forum for discussing large scale restoration/preservation issues as well.
Groups looking to restore the real deal are asking for donations in the millions of pounds and require scrutiny from those interested parties who might 'invest'.  That, I am afraid requires difficult questions, debates and challenges to be offered up, as much of the money will inevitably come from the public purse.
It is far better, in my opinion, for these debates to occur within the fraternity, as it prepares those who are likely to invest their time and effort for a very public grilling.
Moderation on this forum seems to be a little nanny like, and I do not feel that it takes into account that we are all grown ups and should be able to deal with a little light criticism.
Perhaps an un moderated section, with a health warning, should be included within paddleducks which is only open to full members to have a bloody good argument/debate to avoid those with intelligent and searching minds to debate before they all (and I mean the majority) leave?
There are serious issues with the Medway Queen and the Ryde which need serious and far reaching discussions.  These debates are likely, with the current policies, to be 'moderated' and are an affront to free speech and public scrutiny.

I ask you to see sense.

This forum exists, as you say, mainly for modelers. There is obviously an interest in the full size ships and preservation efforts. News of these vessels and progress is always welcome. BUT and it's a big but, the moderation may seem 'nanny like to you that is because this forum is vulnerable to being sued under the laws of Libel. Criticism of a person is one thing, but defamatory remarks and insults are quite another. Free speech does NOT include the right to make unsubstantiated defamatory comments.
This is a forum for ALL ages we are not 'all grown ups here'.

We appreciate that feelings and passions run high when dealing with the awesome task of trying to save our heritage, however this forum is NOT a fundraising platform. I would also respectfully suggest that some of the comments made recently and in the past may well put people OFF supporting preservation projects like the ones discussed.

We, as moderators have to take the larger view, which is that this forum  AS A WHOLE is more important than one specific area, member or cause.

I would respectfully ask that you bear this in mind when you post.

I think the Moderators have done the wise thing. If someone has a bone to pick about someone do it eleswhere (preferably on there website or a court of law).
Regards,
Gerald.

Hi PD's........& Stuart asks....Derek...."Can I ask that you respect our decision"...well  :whistle ...you know the answer to this question Stuart....I have & will continue to offer my 100% support to decisions made & published by the moderators on PD's

Having said this & not wanting to retrace my comments in the recent Ryde string..........I did suggested something like 'thank goodness....PD's do not suffer from the slinging matches offered in other marine WEB forums'

From memory....in my ten years @ PD's........I have only witnessed two such posting strings where the  :gathering moderator/s needed to act  :nono :nono....so to me this displays two points

1) our PD members exercise restraint in the general postings
2) thankfully the need or level of authoritative moderation has been minimal........ Derek  :beer
