Unknown PT at Portsmouth 1917
« on: May 14, 2009, 09:16:31 PM »
Hello all,
While researching for my R/C Battleship I came across this picture of a paddle tug and am curious to know it's name/details.
The picture is Portsmouth in 1917 showing the visiting Russian Flagship "Tsesarevich" and in the background HMS Victory.
I have done some brief searching to see if I could find a match as to which PT it could be, but to-date have not found anything resembling a match (limited knowledge of paddlers  :-[).
Any assistance/advise most appreciated.
Regards
Roger.

Hi Roger

I suspect that this is a picture of PS Dromedary - an Admiralty tug built in 1894 by Barclay Curle for duties at Portsmouth - see here;

Hi Stuart,
I do believe we have a match  :angel, many thanks for your prompt reply and assistance.
Quite an attractive tug, it's hard to tell from period photo's as she just appears as a grimy vessel but the builders model (admittedly with spit'n'polish) shows that even working vessels had a "presence".
Thanks again

Roger.
