Here's a superb article on building a model of the Indiana, an American sidewheeler that was originally built in 1900. This model is BIG at 1:48 scale it's 85" long with a beam of 11.5"

I saw this model at the London Model Engineer Exhibition around 1990, it was VERY impressive and this picture doesn't do it justice - but you can see the colour scheme...

I'd like to have seen it with the paddlebox cover in place (which is on the table nearby, no doubt removed to show the detail of the wheel)

Fantastic model - I think I've seen it pictured a couple of times in Model Boats mag., again with the paddle cover off so that the construction of the wheel and box was open to view.
