I `ve been a modeller for most of my life, having built the usual stuff....model aircraft, RC and CL...slot cars....RC Cars.....Yachts.....all types of boats......DIY.......etc......built three steam loco`s and my current passion is Paddle boats........Jeanie Deans......Great Eastern....and my latest model is...Jeanie Deans at War...this can be seen on the Modelboats website here....   http://www.modelboats.co.uk/albums/member_album.asp?a=565

All my models are shown on this website.....if you have a look around!

I hope some of you chaps out there will have a look and post some comments please

That`s all for the time being fella`s...............Bob

Welcome to Paddleducks Bob,

A really nice looking model of the Jeanie Deans - And it's unusual to see it built in it's wartime guise.... Well done!

Regards
Eddy

Hi Bob,
That's a wonderful model of the GE. I have the drawings but always seem to have something else on my plate that keeps me from getting to the construction part. As a curiosity, what is the source of your drawings--his book or something else?
If I had any kind of  quarrel with anything that that I see, it would only be with your caption on the page of photos--"Brunels' greatest ship."
Sadly, Russell seems to get very little credit for his own work from any quarter. If you read the text volume of his 3 vol book The Modern System of Naval Architecture (1865), Russell lays out pretty clearly what it was that Brunel was responsible for, largely the physical construction and launching with a few incorporated suggestions . Brunel himself said on several occasions that he was NOT a naval architect. There is no question that given the time period, it was a major engineering accomplishment to put it all together, but it is not quite the same as creating the design which is on Russell's Wave Principle. Sadly, the two books about Russell make him seem somewhat a fool at times, but that is the biographers'--not the subjects' --problem. For me, it is like saying that the guy who put the rivets in the Spitfire should get all the credit for its glory. Think Mitchell for spitfire, think Russell for GE.
Credit where credit is due. You've done a fantastic job of re-creating Russell's greatest ship. I envy your skills.
a Yank putting his 2 cents worth in.

Hello there!.........Greateastern

Thanks for having a look at my gallery............you`re quite right, Russell Scott must have been a major contributor to the design and build of this great ship. But, there again, Russell Scott must have had a skillful design team......that did the actual work!!

I`ve got a great respect and awe for this ship and I`m always on the lookout for new pictures and snippets connected with her.

Now listen to this!.......The ship was broken up at Rock Ferry, near Birkenhead and in the vicinity, there is a pub called the Great Eastern and the interior is filled with GE relics taken from the ship at breakup time.

And get this!.........They want to demolish it!!!!!!  I`ve informed the Maritime Museum at Liverpool and they are keeping their eye on the situation.

The model is based on the hull of Jeanie Deans, about 10 inches longer and 2 inches deeper and I used a book of photos for most of the superstructure and scoured the net for further info. All great fun at the time!

My gallery does describe the build in great detail from start to finish and I`m hoping more forum members will take a look and make constuctive comments

All for now GE!..............Bobrunel

Hi Bob,   (if I may be so bold)

I've had a look around the site and had to say "I'm impressed". Well done on the work you've put in. It's certainly a model to be proud of, and its a new experience to communicate with an Author.

Welcome to our club and I hope to see many more contributions, and maybe have a question or two.

Cheers ... Ken

Very impressive models, I've never seen a 'Great Eastern' model outside a museum, I do like the weathering/rust on it :)

Many thanks to the Paddleducks members who have looked at my sites and your kind comments!

I`ve also made the Wilton Castle paddler which was featured in the Modelboats Magazine (March 08)
......and an interesting point is that a one time Captain of the boat is a member of our club...The Etherow Model Boat Club!

Pictures of Wilton Castle are here...   http://www.modelboats.co.uk/albums/member_photo.asp?a=388&p=2324

I hope some of you chaps will have a look and hopefully pass a few comments.

More to follow.............Bob
