Greetings,
I built an electric powered sternwheeler years ago but was disappointed at the way it sounded with the electric gearbox. So I decided to try building a steam engine and picked up a used lathe. Well I have three lathes now, as well as two bench mills. This is my lastest project. It is not steam or gas but is atmospheric and runs on alcohol. I came across this site and am now all "fired up" to try a steam boat. I'm in USA, Northwest Montana, North end of Flathead lake, plenty of room to run a boat!

Towboatjoe,
I have read quite a few of your posts and it seems like you are a very important resource, you understand that boats should have a paddle in back where it belongs instead of hanging off the sides like a wounded duck

I really like the Verity. I am kinda looking for a small packet to model, kinda like the "King of the River" but somewhat longer. I want the boiler space open so you can see them and the access doors down low on the engine house so you can see the engines, kind of like some of the pics of the Sturt. I don't want a full blown show boat as I'm more interested in the engine/boiler/automated controls than making hundreds of little ginger-bread railings.
I may very well just lengthen the King of the River and use it as a test platform for engine development.

Hello Mike, there is a design kicking around in the dark recesses of my mind. I recall a stern wheeler as you sescribe which was used to supply General Custers forces. If I remember correctly the drawings were by John Fryant and there must be a reference in this site for them. The beauty of this design shows the open boiler /engine deck with a house above on the bridge deck. Plenty of opportunity for detail and little extras.
