New Guy From Alaska
« on: November 12, 2008, 04:54:31 PM »
Hi group.  Jerry from Anchorage, Alaska here.

This is my first post to this group.

While I'm not a boat modeler, I am very interested in steam engines.  It seems that those two topics are pretty closely connected.

I do a lot of metal work, mostly home shop tinkering, and am a commercial pilot by trade.  I fly small twins for a charter company in Anchorage.

My metal working is with a 9x20 lathe, a similarly sized mill, a Mig, & a Tig welder, & the usual assortment of hand tools.

I have been working on a website about my machinery for a while.  If anyone is interested, it can be viewed at:

http://www.akpilot.net

I have a picture that I shall attempt to post.  Some of you may remember reading about the sternwheeler that ran aground in Alaska 2-3 years ago.  I have a pic of it in Ketchikan, Alaska on its first trip after being repaired.  I think it is impressive.  I'll title the pic Sternwheeler3.

Jerry here again.
I was mostly successful at uploading the pic of the sternwheeler.
The album title is "muskt".  I had a time of it just getting it to upload.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it.

Hi and welcome! Managed to find your picture. That is indeed an impressive ship - I haven't seen a bigger paddlewheeler before. What is its name?

And why don't you upload the picture here in this topic?

Duh!

I guess I never considered adding the pic to the message.  Don't know why.

I shall attempt to add it to this reply.  Hope it works.

First off, I should apologize for the number of posts from me.  The instructions said to make several posts in order to become  "bonafied" (sp).

Here is a link to the story about the sternwheeler in the pic.

Hi Jerry. I enjoyed your Sternwheler 3 picture.  I am considering a model very like this. I like the links in your web page too.  The tool grinding is good for tool steel.  Nowadays everyone seems to use TC, but other than for hard cast Iron, I don't see the need.  The tool profiles need to be different for the two cutting materials, and we can still learn a thing or two from older articles.
