USS Wolverine

Here's some photos of Doug Kinlochs model of the aircraft carrier USS Wolverine - Still a long way to go, but the model is coming together nicely. These photos show it undergoing it's first on the water test at Edinburgh MBC.

Hopefully Doug will jump in and tell us a bit more about it in due course - In the meantime, here's the images to wet your appetites

Sadly the motor arrangement, while tidy, requires a level of model engineering beyond mine! I have real issues in the worm drives and the gearing's turned out to be wrong, not enough speed. So belts/ chains it'll have to be. At least there's plenty room.

Hi Doug.

Have you tried smaller drive wheels to engage the worm gears. This will speed up the revolutions. Also, worm gears are notorious for wandering off line unless they have bearings each side to a plate.  Hope this helps, as fitting belt drives means the motors will have to be turned sideways across the boat. If your boat is not wide enough for two motors, end to end, then one will have to be in front of the other, which means different size belts. (my problem, if I had decided on two motors, but I'm sticking with one, now).

Remember that electric motors always run faster in one direction than the other, so if using a twin drive setup, mount one in front of the shaft and the other behind the shaft, then they will both turn in the same direction when going forwards or astern...... Mounting them both on one side of the shaft means that one motor will always be running in reverse and you'll never get a model that steers well, because one paddlewheel will be running faster than the other....

Just my two-penneth worth gained from experience.

Hi Doug,
Following on from what Eddy said, this was how I set up independent drive in my Glasgow which allowed me to use identical sized belts but like a previous comment, it is important to have good bearings everywhere. Not cheap but worth the effort.

Thanks all, the belts look like the idea I have in my head though I need to sort the bearings out! I have plenty room for the motors to run across the hull.

Doug has made a little more progress with the Wolverine, here are a few photos of how it's looking at the moment - Sadly I don't have any more details, apart from the fact that the pictures were taken yesterday on the canal at Broxburn.
