Hello
« on: April 05, 2008, 08:50:37 AM »
Hi, I'm new to this site , stumbled across it when looking for info on my new project DEPV Talisman.
I have just finished a 1:48 scale TS King George V (Clyde steamer) and now looking to build a paddle steamer. (Photo attached)

I have allways been put off such a model because of the building problems however I have made a commitment to myself to do it right and make the wheels myself as the Graupner wheels are wrong for this model (scale and have rims)

I would be most interested if someone could supply / lend / sell me a plan for a feathering wheel ideally a builders drawing.

Anyway back to the work bench and i lookforward to returning.

Kim

Hi Kim, Talisman is my favourite paddler too. i am also buiding TALISMAN (although slowly!) in 48th scale but in her wartime guise as HMS ARISTOCRAT, when she was rebuilt as an anti aircraft escort. Starting in January 2000 issue Model boats ran an in-depth six part series on building TALISMAN, and for me it ranks as the finest article ever on building a paddler. It has everything and if you can get hold of the relevent magazines it will answer evry question you may have.
Dont underestimate the graupner paddle wheel set - it can be very easily altered to a good likeness of the LNER paddlers wheels if you dont believe me look at the relevent section of the above articles. They are very practical and actually look much better for altering.
please keep us posted on the build and the best of luck with it. Any problems please ask- we will have the answer somewhere.
two very good booklets have been published on talisman- TALISMAN THE LONE CRUSADER.  and HMS ARISTOCRAT A PADDLER AT WAR. Both are a good read and very informative. Cheers for now, Walter.
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.

Hello Kim, welcome aboard this wonderfully informative forum. I've had a look through the plans and downloads section and there are a couple of interesting pieces in there for you. Admitttedly there is a proviso on downloading these articles which are in the public domain. A Personal Message is on its way to you too. I hope you enjoy the investigations prior to the build progressing, I often find this to be as rewarding as the build itself.

cheers
Jim

Hi, and thanks for the replies.

Couple of points

My reasons for making my own paddle wheels are I'm lucky enough to have access to a lathe and a cnc machine. I did consider the Graupner wheels however at the price i can buy the materials to build them from metal and have some left for the next project...

My main reason for making my own is the Graupner wheels, even when modified are still a little flimsy for a working model and also they are way out of scale- if you look at the previous mentioned article the paddle box tops are almost the same height of the superstructure tops which in my opinion doesn't look good.

At the present moment i don't have access to the download section  :(  so i  would be very grateful if someone could help with some plans
Many thanks

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.

I have a set of plans similar to the Phantom plan from a set of plans for the paddle tug Reliant which i bought as a boy on a trip to the maritime museum. However they are not suitable for the Talisman. One day i might get around to building the Reliant have the mould made but because of its small size i never did get around to casting a hull......
