Hi Folks, things ARE HAPPENING AT LAST for the John Amos. She has been lifted from her watery bed for the next stage of renovation. Visit the Kingswear Castle site for photos of her being lifted bodily out of her dock by a very large crane. the excellent pictures can be found in the April pictures of the month section of the kwsc  site. Does anybody know where I can get a plan for John H Amos, I thought there was one on this site but I am not very good at searching any help would be appreciated

I thought there was something on JAH, but I can't find it - nor can I find anything for any other boat plans - maybe Eddy can help.
As it happens, I have the drawings copied from "British Steam Tugs" on my computer, and can print them out to whatever scale you would like (within reason). The only thing is that they would be on A3 sheets and you would have to assemble them.

Thank you for that Malcolm , I had forgoten about the P N Thomas book I have a copy of it so Ill go and have a play. I have been thinking about what boat to build for some time and initially wanted to go with a fiberglass hull , and build a boat about 40 ish inch's as I want to use steam but I have not been able to find a suitable hull, And I am now wondering weather a slight addition to the depth might make it a bit more stable, so it looks like it will have to be a plank on frame, I am not in a mad rush but want to start correlating my ideas for when I start as I have a few projects still to Finnish and I am not the quickest of builders.

Hi Peter, I think the P N THOMAS plan is the only one in existence and Is actualy a shipyard drawing so its pretty accurate. I have seen a couple of good John Amos models built from the Graupner Glasgow basic kit with a little modification to the paddle boxes and a new superstructure. They certainly looked like her!!!.Regards, walter

I think I read somewhere recently that the first job they are going to do now that it is out of the water is to draw some plans as there had been a lot of alterations over the years to the boat, I think I may have asked this before but did anybody do a Fiberglas hull for the Glasgow as I want to use steam and I am not a fan of abs

I don't think anyone has ever produced a fibreglass hull for the Glasgow Peter, but Graupner will sell a hull on it's own for 50.70 Euros - Which could be used to produce your own fibreglass version, considerably cheaper than buying the full kit.

Thank you for that Eddy its worth looking in to . I want to use steam and long term I am not happy with the thought of abs, when you consider the amount of work that will go in to a build abs is just not my favorite material to work with, the reason I asked was some years ago i attended a lot of meetings at cheddar, and when they brought out there paddle engine I was going to buy one till I found the Glasgow had a plastic hull, and someone said just get a fiberglass replacement but I never found anyone who made them, so I thought if anybody knew of a hull of about 40" ish,it would be some one on hear .

Her condition surprised me too, I had the impression she was better but hey ho, she's on a barge so at least 'safe'. Be interesting to see how they get on with her.

Be great to see her working again, think we'll have a long wait though.

Some of the respondents werew in doubt about using the Graupner 'Glasgow' hull for a steam powered model of the JHA.  I have done so and to date, the only problem was when I turned the gas firing up a little too far and scorched the inside of the wooden superstructure!  I have had no real problems so far with the ABS hull. I have posted a picture of my model in my photo album.

Glad to see that a start has been made on the old ship - hope they do not give up!
