"World's largest train ferry", SOLANO revisited.

Hey PDs,

This topic was brought up around 3 years ago, but parusing CPRR's site I found that they now have available for download some of the technical drawings of the SOLANO featured on the site. For anyone with a lot of ambition and patience, this would be an interesting project.

I've tried to include a view of the SOLANO taken from Google Earth showing her at her present resting place near Antioch California U.S.A. but I can't seem to get it to work. If you wish to see her using Google Earth the coordinates are; 38 degrees 01' 01.31" N. by 121 degrees 48' 18.34" W. She's the object directly above the black outlined red rectangle. Using MSN's "Maps and Directions" and switching to "Bird's eye view", you can see one of her massive A-frames is still standing after 78 years of serving as a breakwater.

I find it interesting that she used 2 walking beam engines, both mounted on the centerline of the ship. To accommodate this arrangement, her paddle's shafts had to be offset 16 feet apart.
