Well, next tuesday will be my last day as a smoker..... The nicotine patches are ordered and will arrive on monday, and wednesday will see me struggling to give up the dreaded weed!
Wish me luck!

Apparently it is quite easy to quit; I have known someone who did it hundreds of times.
Seriously, I have had lots of colleagues quit with success, so good luck Eddy. Most did it just by willpower, and not with patches. They were helped by colleages and environment. None put on weight from eating as a substitute activity.

:music ..Hi PD's....Eddy....its's about seven years for me without a cigarette as a 30 year smoker...I used Nicobate patches & would recommend them.... but :ohno ...a few things
The directions state "place you first 24 hour patch on in the morning"....
"place your first patch on last thing at night" & maintain this dosing procedure"
I kept one cigarette packet with two ciggies in it.......don't throw them away
My biggest fear was the first morning after = Sunday morning which for years was cup of
+ two ciggies + read the Sunday paper + another
+ two ciggies sitting the balcony in the sunshine :vacat
Then when the sun was over the yard arm = two cigies +
Sleeping patterns became a little unusual + being conscious of dreams during sleep - the first two weeks were the worst
As others have said...only you can decide....but if you do open a new
every day......
Now if we could only get Bandit or Vinnie to call into the shop & ask for a packet for Bogstandard :sob
PS...wasn't it that Sir Fancis Drake that bought the weed back from the America's :?:

I tried those patches too, Eddy, but couldn't get them to stay alight!
Seriously though, good luck. I gave up in 1971, after ten years of smoking. No patches then, just willpower and Polo Mints! If you want to do it you will do it - and the first thing you'll notice is how good food starts to taste.

Typical,
The worst ones to complain are the ex ones.
But joking aside, my doctor has told me not to stop smoking 500 fags a day until I have had my shoulder op. (imminent). Something to do with chemicals my brain cell produces to stop pain.
After my op I will definitely try to stop. But it will mean I can't make any more engines, no packets to draw on.
It is easy giving up smoking, staying stopped is the hardest part.
Bandit is the worst, he chews the stuff and spits it out all over my workshop floor.
Best of luck on your attempt, I am sure you will be successful, 'cos if your not you will have the wrath of all the members on here getting on at you.
And as Rick says, plenty of sweets. Totally rotten teeth, but at least you won't cough in the mornings.

Thanks for the support guys - I've tried to give up before only using willpower, but never managed more than 5 weeks, so this time I thought I'd try the patches and see if they get me past the stumbling block!
I had wondered about applying them on an evening so the nicotine got into my bloodstream overnight and helped with the real craving first thing on a morning, so thanks for that Derek.
I'm all psyched up and ready to go, so lets hope I'm succesful this time!

I am trying to quit these things too.
There is a new little pill their advertising over here in the States. I think it was developed in Sweden. I'm sure its available world wide. The Company is called Chantix.
There website is
www.chantix.com
The success rate they have seen with this pill has been the best so far when compared to all other methods. The pill contains no nicotine. Yes a scary thought!
It works by blocking the nicotine from reaching the receptor sight in the brain. You eventually get over the fix.
I going to try it. Hopefully I don't inadvertently bite anyones head off during the nicotine detox process.
Hope this helps. I wish you the best of luck mate.

Its about time! it gets darned drafty in the club with you hanging out of the door snorting on a woodbine- and just imagine trips away on a cold day without the window wide open!. Seriously though, best of luck. My father was a lifelong smokerand died when he was only 67. My brother (who is now an OZZY and does everything the way the true Ozzies do (in excess!) is younger than me and looks ten years older has had a lung colapse twice ans STILL goes back to the weed!. You will get plenty of support from us and remember if you lapse your name will be posted in the wee Kirk as well as this parrish.!!!!! regards, walter.

Dead right Walter, winter woolies are so expensive. So are chocolate biscuits. Now then Eddy, if you want to continue devouring my choc bikkies, you'll need to comply with the Nosmo King rule. Just think how many triple expansion engines you'll be able to afford when you pu the tab shop out of business

Hi Eddy,
I haven't smoked in 10 years but I never quit--I just don't smoke anymore. I QUIT before and lasted a few years but by just not doing it, I've lasted 10 yers. AND HERE"S HOW. I heard a great, and inspirational, story of a jazz musician stuck in a Paris hotel without money and without cigarettes. He said to himself "I've tried to quit before, but now since I'm out of money, I'm just not going to do for now" and he didn't. He never quit though, because that's a negative term, and for some reason human's don't seem to like the word NO.. Not doing something is a choice and I think that is where the success is. A personal decision. Once you decide you're not going to do it, it wil be a matter of personal pride not to break your word.
I gained a few pounds but that is natural because the metabolism changes and your stomach will actually absorb more nutrient. (birds that eat acorns don't eat the whole thing because there is a lot of tannin in the pointy end and it does indeed tan their stomach lining. Smoking could be the same for us). Food willl also taste better,so less salt, better for your heart.
best to you on your new adventure.

How long is it since Eddy had his last cigarette?
Eddy: have you survived since Wed.8.11 smoke free?
Are you eating lots of apples or pork pies or Banbury Buns as a substitute?
Are you researching quirks of the English language as a substitute (that can occupy all former smoking time)?
Everyone is barracking in the wings (or marine equivalent - the paddleboxes). Is our support showing results?
