My new steam engine project

Goodness me Rayman, I thought this post was dead and buried a long time ago.

This is in fact a mine engine, cylinder on the top, crank and flywheel underneath. A table engine you will find, is a cylinder underneath and crank/flywheel above.

I think the plans for the basic version of this engine is already on this site, but if you can't find it, send me your email address and I will let you have a copy.

I have modified this one with a different valve linkage, and a slip eccentric to get it to run in reverse.

Hello John,  Forrest Classics list a "Maudsley Table Engine " in their models with vert. cylinder and underslung shaft.There is also a very fine model in the "Henry Ford Museum" but I won't argue. Yes I downloaded the files from here thank you. The Pearl engine is a very compact little job developed for small open steam launches and is a treat to watch running. regards Ray

I did a search and found this:
"Encyclopedia > Table engine
A table engine is a variety of stationary steam engine where the cylinder is placed on top of a table-shaped base, the legs of which stand on the baseplate which locates the crankshaft bearings. The piston rod protrudes from the top of the cylinder and has fixed to it a cross-head which runs in slides attached to, and rising from, the cylinder top. Long rods connect the crosshead to the crankshaft, on which is fixed the flywheel.
This pattern engine was first introduced by James Sadler in the Portsmouth Block Mills and was house-built in that its framing was fixed to the engine house.
Henry Maudslay patented an improved version of this a few years later, and other makers adopted the configuration."
I have seen engines with the cylinders on both the top and the bottom (separate engines not one with both), and they were all referred to as table engines, so I always figured that is was the four columns and the plate(base) was why they were called tables.

Very sorry I haven't replied before, but it seems that when I check for new posts, the website lies to me, and unless I go trolling, I miss a lot of new ones.

Anyway gents, I will bow to your superior knowledge. Unfortunately, I don't specialise in that sort of engine, and somewhere along the line I have got my information wrong.

It is nice to know that people will find the correct information if bad information is relayed across. I now stand corrected, and if in the future, I am ever asked the same sort of question, I can guarantee my reply.

So it just goes to show, there is something new to be learned every day.

Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship on this engine. This is truly something to be proud of. I just love all the detail especially on the columns.

It isn't my design, it is an old Elmer Verburg plan of a mine engine, I just brought it up to date and made it look a bit more 'Victorian'
