Hi John,

Took my eyes of the site for a couple of weeks and return to find you up to your old tricks :great

This info might be elsewhere in this site; if so, my apologies in advance.

I noted a while back that Sandy made reference to a variety of valve gear linkages  - Hackworth, Joy, Stephensons, Crampton. Along the lines that if a picture is worth the proverbial, then an animated picture must be worth volumes, I've come across a program by Charles Dockstader that dynamically demonstrates some 34 types of valve linkage, including both inside and outside admission variants where applicable. In addition to seeing how each linkage functions at various user-controlled speeds (both forward and reverse), program allows various dynamic variables to be altered to view their impact on the overall valve dynamics. Even Bandit might get a headache!

A bit of a download (14 ZIP files at about 1.3 megs ea, expanding to 39 megs) but well worth the effort. Have run under Vista, Win 2000 and Win 98SE and everything functions except the sound is a bit wonky in Vista. :(

I'm sorry to say I already have this on my computer, very good program though, it explains everything in such detail, pictures are always better than words.

A little update now.
Have made the steam chest and I am now working on getting the linkage from the new eccentric rod position and still retain the exact movement as the original. This entailed some rather critical drilling, so that is where I am up to on the photo, the shaping can come later. The sketch shows what I am trying to achieve.
Also on the photo, I bit the bullet and machined the 180deg slot in the flywheel for the slip eccentric. I just hope I don't regret going for this method of engine reversal.

Finally got the engine to a basic running state, so I did a vid as it is being stripped down now to finish off all the painting and polishing.

Very nice John - I noticed you've used a lot of very technical terms in the video though, and they confused me a little..... "It's had all it's doo-dahs fitted" and "a chuffer"  :hehe

Eddy,
When doing a vid, the first words that springs to mind are what get spoken.
I was trying to run an engine, hold a camera with a bad arm and trying to think at the same time, so you get rid of the hardest one to do, the problem is I do it all the time, forgetting to think.
What would you have called them? :lol:
Now that's a good subject for a post.

Hi bogstandard, very nice little engine. In your country called a "table" engine also was used in U.S. mainly as a small launch engine and surprisingly was fitted in the OTIS steam shovel of 1836. I have been looking for years for plans for same, now just have to get started on building. If you "google "Pearl Steam Engines" they build in single and twin versions and have them running on video, both are launch engines with S/L reversing. regards rayman
