Saga of Medway Queen

It appears that after accepting the first possibility of the costing to rebuild the hull of the Medway Queen, which has take one year to get this far, the HLF has come to life about perfection.
It seems that a grant that will not even cover the cost of welding the hull, under present iron escalating prices, is now possibly to be expected to stretch to rivet the hull in its entire structure. Albeit rejected on our second application as “To Expensive”
I feel that this is another way to try to refuse to honour their word, in as much as to the possibility of handing back to another department of the lottery (how many of these are there?) and back to square one as before. This is the third time that the lottery have “Moved the Goal Posts” but then they seem to be dab hands at this past time regards the Medway Queen.

It just highlights the reason why I dn't buy lottery tickets - The whole damned lot of them are a waste of space!!

Thank Eddy, It seems that albeit we are told the lottery fund is political isolated, it is apparent the most political projects get the lion share. The Dome, now Olympic project that swallows money up, as of no consequences.
But then it is up to the electorate to make themselves heard, not just moan, and pass on. The few of us that do are classed as eccentrics as ever. What on earth makes people tick today?
After twenty odd years, one gets tired; maybe that is the criteria.
Come on you members, surely you must have an opinion, right or wrong that’s what democracies are all about.

And so the sager of the preservation of the Paddle Steamer Midway Queen goes on. The symbol of our past history peacetime and sadly wartime past is in jeopardy. No other paddle steamer can match her record in any field at present

My own feeling, are that the Heritage Lottery Fund are ‘Back Tracking’ on this issue, trying to find any possible ‘Loop Hole’ to delay the project, not to fund this ‘Historical Project’
In a nutshell the possibility to ‘Rivet’ a ships hull, having only granted £1.8 million to do so. Knowing that to ‘Rivet’ a ship would be possible six times as much. And then asking why, they (MQPS) had done costing to ‘Weld’ the hull.
The same old augments are put forward by HLF, and at a later date they move the goal posts at their convenience.
Maybe the ’12 Day’ wonder of the ‘Olympics’ is more important that our ‘Maritime History’ which is being starved of help to further this event.
But then it is up to the public, do we want to preserve our Maritime Heritage or not! Or let our lottery money feed political issues, which this is, albeit the powers to be will tell you it is not.

As an alternate ploy   ...please consider to ask Mick [Sir Michael Jagger] :no1   one of the principal patrons of MQ....to help &  :gather & resolve this

Well, the Lottery folks approved Waverley's new funnels,which are welded with dummy rivets. Can they not do the same for the hull of MQ with dummy rivets down to the waterline?

Anyone read december's issue of Model Boats mag? On page 8 is a report on the Southern Model Safari (model show) at Marwell Zoo (last june)....
it says "the Medway Queen Preservation Society had an information stand and some novelties for sale to gather funds for the ongoing restoration work on the Medway Queen, which I was told was making good progress with  the hull plating near complete. The society have still to raise the funds for a new boiler and repairs to the paddle wheels........."
 Last I heard (read on the website, I mean) a meeting to review the situation ie. to decide if a welded hull with rivets where they'd be visible is acceptable as part of a heritage restoration....or something like that.... was due to take place this wednesday.
The article (in Model Boats) seems to suggest that the hull is almost completed!

what are the chances of those coming up?
- well, since they're all just identical rubber balls, which happen to have numbers printed on them, the chances are exactly the same as they are for the six birthdates/painstakingly calculated/random numbers that everyone else has chosen.... a sobering thought  :?

Is there any more news on the Medway Queen Len?

It seems like quite a while since we heard anything after the national lottery changed the goalposts yet again!

As I've said once before, tell them the restored vessel will be used by black ballet dancers who are single mothers, and they'll throw money at it! Or come up with some link to the Olympics!

I think it may be apparent that I don't hold the national lottery in very high esteem?
