Extreme lightweight smokestacks: Cigar tubes
« on: August 09, 2007, 09:51:40 AM »
Hi,
Just a modeling tip which I accidentally discovered and that had not found elsewhere so far:
As we all know, superstructures should be built as light as possible, to avoid the model from getting top heavy. In my opinion an ideal material for smoke stacks (at least for small scale models of steamers) are aluminium cigar tubes. In a good tobacco store, you will find them in a variety of diameters, they are extremely light, perfectly round, and prototypically thin walled.
And the very best thing: If your nerves are stressed by some delicate detail modeling job, you can take a break on the patio to enjoy the cigar!

Attached is the picture of my current project under construction (admittedly NO paddler, I apologize...), a H0 scale tugboat which has so little displacement that I struggle with every single gram.
