Hi everybody. It was just yesterday when I found your great site and… well, it took approximately 5 minutes for me to decide to join you.  :D
Let me introduce myself very shortly. I’m a Hungarian guy over 50 and I think in this age it is really high time to start realizing the biggest dreams from our childhood. In my case this is a steamboat.
Why? Maybe the infection came from my grandfather who was a mechanic and worked with steam engines about one hundred years ago. The second reason is that I used to sail at Lake Balaton where I learned to respect the boat, the water and the wind. The third and final reason that I like to work with wood and make small toys, wooden puzzles etc.
So the decision ready but I think I have to learn a lot before I can launch my steamboat. I’m afraid I will mostly lurking and maybe ask some stupid questions sometimes…

Kind regards to all,
Ferenc

It's good to see you've joined us Ferenc, welcome to Paddleducks.

Always remember, there's only one stupid question - the one you didn't ask! As Derek said, we're here to help if we can, so never be afraid to ask.

What is the current situaiton with real paddlers at  Budpest?
 Â
Is Kossuth sitll a restautant and museum?
 Â
Is Budapest still lying rusting somehwere?
 Â
And what happened to Petofi? I know she had a fire, and was to  be rebuil;t and diesleised, but I have never hgeard any more?
 Â
And of course you now have the former Stadt Passau, now Graf  something or other, and supposed to be running trips this year? Has she started  yet?

Hi Alistair,

It seems you are more familiar with the Hungarian paddlers than me!  :D

Well, Kossuth is still serves as museum and restaurant close to the famous Chain Bridge.
Budapest was sold and according to my information she is in Piraeus/Greece.
Petofi is rusting here in Hungary and she is dreaming on a potential restoration...  :(
Graf Szechenyi was really renewed and she is floating on the Danube somewhere (see the picture below).

If you are really interested in the Hungarian boats and ships you can find a lot of references and pictures on the following URL: http://www.papernet.hu/?index.php&lang=eng
Though it is in English too, but sometimes you can see only Hungarian denominations so I give you some help, a short vocabulary of the most important words.

hajo - boat or ship (in Hungarian there is no difference between the two categories)
oldalkerekes - side-wheeler
goz (there are two accent marks on the "o") - steam
csavar - screw or propeller
tengeri - maritime
folyami - river

Maybe that is enough as a first lesson...
