Hi there Scotfriend, there is only one event that I'm aware of up here in Scotland which is worth considering. On Sunday 20th Aug Edinburgh MBC are doing a static dispaly in association with the RNLI at South Queensferry. Sadly I do not have a day pass for this one (my wife only allows me about six per season   ) and the following weekend there is the major attractions over the Bank Holiday Weekend down in Cheshire apparently at  Ellesmere Port and the alternative show at EPIC centre in the same area  :?  Neither of which I could go to as they are about 350 miles away from me! I do hope there are other suggestions forthcoming from our members but I appreciate that your time is limited to go all over the country and maybe an indication of where you are proposing to start off from would help us with your search.
Apart from that I hope you enjoy your holiday.
cheers

Jim

If you fancied changing to the north of England, Walter and I would be more than happy to take you around some of the local sights Hans.... There's the paddler Wingfield Castle in Hartlepool, only about 10 miles from where I live, and you'd be more than welcome to come along to our model boat club and sail some of our models....

Hello Hans:
 Â
Please consider visiting the "Medway Queen" in  Kent.  Also there is the Chatham Historic Naval Dockyard on the Medway  River not too far from her where you can also see the "John H. Amos in an  adjacent slip.  Len Knight took me there and its well worth the trip  as "Medway Queen's" restored funnel and paddleboxes are there.  Another idea in the Medway area is a trip aboard the "Kingswear  Castle".
 Â
I also strongly suggest the Science Museum in  Kensington for which you could reserve a whole day.  The Imperial War  Museum is also worth a visit.  I was frankly extremely disappointed with  the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, but if you have a spare afternoon, at  least you can say you've been there.  I have never been to the Plans Room  there but that could be rather interesting.
 Â
In Sussex (the south of England) you might also consider a  visit to the "Bluebell Railway" which has some super restored steam engines  and rolling stock which you can ride on over a section of  delightful country line.
 Â
To the south of the "BlueBell" is the port of  Newhaven with a very interesting Fort which played an important part in WW2 and  also a nice little Marine and Historical Museum. All these attractions are  accessible by the very efficient UK rail system.
 Â
Just some ideas...I'll let you know if anything else  comes to mind.  There must be Model Boat Clubs in London which can be  contacted to find out if they are holding any events.

Hi Hans
A visit to the south of England suggests a short voyage on the preserved paddle steamer Kingswear Castle which sails on the river Medway and on the Thames and near coasts.  The skipper John Megoran is a very friendly chap, as are all of the crew.  Details are available on line at the ship's website www.pskc.freeserve.co.uk  If you visit Eddy and Walter at Darlington & District Model Boat Club I can promise you free use of a paddle tug model.
Cheers from Bob Golder

SITES to SEE London area.

Further to the mention of the Dockyard Museumat Chatham, this really is a MUST SEE. It is vast! (So big it even has its own brewery ehich does the most superb beers. As well as JOHN AMOS there is a WW2 destroyer, HMS Cavalier, a Victorian steam gunboat,  an attack submarine, all open to the public. Nelsons sail making lofts, a working rope works, 3 covered in slipways full of vehicles and small craft. It is so large that you will require 2 days just for a quick look. The old mast ponds are used by the local model club as a sailing site. An email to the Museum will tell you when they are sailing. 300 yards from the dockyard is the ROYAL ENGINEERS museum stuffed full of army vehicles. I normaly stay at theKING CHARLES hotel next door to the museum. An email to the Rochester tourist information will get you  leaflets on all the atractions in the chatham/ rochester area. Dont forget Kingswear Castle is also at the Museum, Medway Queen is just a short drive away.

A new venue for me, is a preserved Victorian steam coaster actualy in London, SS ROBIN. Never been, but I intend to go. www.ssrobin.org will give you a bit of information. More sugestions to follow when I get my brain switched on. Regards, Walter.
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.

...right next to the Robin is the docklands museum which could be worth a look if you're in that area...(I went there last year, there were a few static models* of, for example, Royal Eagle, an LCC steamer, Great Eastern and a few others - but they wouldn't let me photograph them) not a patch on Chatham though...  http://www.molg.org.uk/english/
*when I say 'a few static models' I mean of paddlers, as I remember there are quite a lot of models of other types of ship and boat!

**if you're that close to London you could go to 'embankment' on the underground, district line and see what they've done to the Tattershall castle

Hi Paddleduck's

that's great thanks for the information about all this stuff, i'd like to see the Medway Queen, the John H Amos and the PS Ryde. Your information gives me the possibility to visit some other things.

Best regards to all of you, Hans
