From the Source to the Sea

Hi PD's  - Sandy - just a simple one liner will do - in the far off land of Western Scotland [where PS Waverley] arrives each day at morning tea time, do you use VHS video format or the dredded PAL system?

Reason being, the RFDS [Royal Flying Doctor Service] here in OZ [which I make a very small donation to each year] has just duplicated a two year old order of mine & provided me with a second copy of "From the Source to the Sea" - Murray river paddlers video, which Peter W & Sean & any other OZ PD will confirm is 65 minutes of GREAT  Murray Paddler footage

So Sandy - what is the answer :?:
[hint, say VHS] & its yours :D
[hint, say PAL] & its not yours :(

Now I have the ACS address as 2,Cairndubh Cottages..........., is this the same address that the POSTIE delivers the postage to :?: - does he/she have a cuppa & Vege sandwich each morning with the staff @ 10.00 AM whilst watching Waverley glide through the mist :?:

PD's - this is a bit :offtopic , but my OZ boiler inspector is being a little officious & over the top with boiler documentation prior to certification etc

Did this phase the ACS management :?: - well yes & no, Sandy has posted a few messages with A*SE - round type expletives .... without the common letters [naturally as he is a tru Scot], however Sandy has confirmed  the ADDITIONAL boiler sectional Drawings will be provided :respect2
:trophy - thank goodness I did not purchase a FRENCH manufactured boiler &  I will just enjoy the occasional drop :beer - thanks Sandy - regards - Derek

 :no1  :D  :D

Hi PD's,

Derek, the short answer is yes we use VHS and YES we use PAL
The first is our Video Format and the second is our normal TV format..but my machine can play all formats....I suppose this means I might only get half the recording...i.e.32 1/2 minutes.... :hehe   :hehe  :music

Address is the same. and yes the postie does stop for a cuppa, now and again...but at 9.45 am... :D  :D  :?  :nose

As for your boiler authorities.... :hmmm  :hmph  :nah  :boom

BTW...your drawings will be in Russian..with Chinese subtitles.. :nose  :shoot  :sob  :oops  :terrific

Best regards

Sandy.

Derek,
UH, :shoot  I think what you ment is you have a VHS tape that is recoded in NTSC format instead of PAL. Which I'm glad to hear other places use the NTSC besides the U.S. :great  I know that PAL is the European format and I just took it for granted everyone used it, but us.

Why did they ever make two different VHS formats anyway. :thinking  I thought that was the principle of phasing out Betamax (which was a better quality recording system). Just think of all the great videos we could share around the world and not worry about compatibility.  :yeah Heck there's five different types of DVD recording modes and only a couple will play on most all DVD players.

TJ, As far as I know both Oz and NZ use PAL. I thought that only the USA and some south and central American states, and I guess Canada use NTSC.

Of course the French are different again and use SECAM!!

Hi PD's...At the severe risk of becoming a bore...lets get a few facts correct....  :?  :oops  :sorry

VHS (JVC) and Betamax (SONY) are methods of recording video information and sound on to tape.

NTSC, PAL and the French SECAM are television transmission standards.

It is the latter of these two (TV Transmission standards) which results in the apparent multiple VHS video standards.

Hence you get VHS (NTSC), VHS (PAL) and VHS (SECAM)

exactly the same would, and does, apply to BETAMAX.

The main difference between the TV standards is the number of lines per frame... NTSC uses 525lines, non interlaced,.... SECAM uses 625 lines, non interlaced and PAL uses 625 lines interlaced.
Other major variations are the the video bandwidth, the vertical frequency and the various sub carrier frequencies used for colour, sound and video information.

Both the UK and OZ use the PAL system, however, in the UK this is PAL (I) which is a UHF transmission with Colour sub carrier at 4.433618 Mhz, sound carrier on 6Mhz and video bandwidth is 5.5Mhz.

OZ uses Pal VHF (B) and or PAL UHF (G) with Colour sub carrier frequency at 4.433618Mhz (same as the UK), sound Carrier is 5.5Mhz and Video Bandwidth is 5Mhz...it is these last two which make the OZ recordings differ from the UK versions.

SECAM and NTSC both use NON INTERLACED line scan systems and would therefore be totaly incompatable with PAL for this reason alone...but the multitude of regional differences in these two systems, with as many differing transmission sub carriers and bandwidths make the whole thing a BL***Y nightmare. :sob  :nose  :shoot

I agree that the BETAMAX recording system was better than the VHS one in many ways, however, VHS won the battle for the home entertainment market due to its longer playing time (for a given length of tape) (not true in the later versions of BETAMAX; SONY eventually cured this problem, but to late unfortunately) and it's ability to unspool the tape from the play heads, whilst rewinding, thus reducing head wear and tape damage.

It (VHS) also had a simpler tape transport mechanism, which was much cheaper to produce.

Interestingly though, the later derivative of SONY's BETAMAX...SONY BETACAM...is now the leading method used by the majority of professional cameramen, and TV video recording studios.

JVC's VII system did not win this battle...so some sort of justice I suppose.

AS for DVD...well we are still at war on this one....it remains to be seen who comes out on top...trouble is there are a lot more combatants in this one.

 :sorry  :rant  :respect2

Best Regards to all

Sandy.

And we haven't even started to talk about HDTV, which is another thing entirely :? , just remember NTSC stands for Never The Same Colour

Ah we do use PAL and may I add that yes Source to Sea is a great 65 minutes wo9rth of Murray River footage...I even quoted it in an assignment!

It's good because it shows them working, talks about the boats history and future and also goes into details such as restoring and environment etc.

Great viewing!

I transferred River Kings and Riverboats remembered (great becasue of all the original paddler fopotage) to DVD! hooray!

Hi PD's - in preparation for my Russian Drawings with Chinese subtitles, I have considered & been :thinking  that a Drawing is a Drawing [straight lines & twisted lines which the latter could be termed as bends I think] so a Russian LION or TWISTIE is probably pretty similar to a British LION or TWISTIE & will look the same - however the Chiness subtitles will have me a little stumped so have been feverously checking my translation skills as below

检查我的翻译技能 -       just in case there are any PD's that don't speak & write fluent Traditional Chinese, any linguist will reconfirm the text says "I am have been checking my translation skills" & no that is not a typo, the word 'am' turns up in lots & lots of English to Trad. CHI translations  - sorry but I cannot explain why :shoot  :music  :?:

Oh Hold On - Sandy - could you please ensure the subtitles will be Traditional  Chinese as this new fandangled  :offtopic Modern Chinese language is too hard for old people like me  :angel to learn - or to better explain it, would just be like someone from south of the southern brick wall border - driving 20 miles west & then asking for a pint of Guinness  - the bartender would not understand the languge -  :nose  :beer Derek
