Thought that you guys may like to see a picture of my new office!!!

Well not quite .... she's moored outside the office I'm using at the moment. She's the Thomas Harrison, just came in this morning with 180 tonnes of Deep Sea Dory.

I'm in the process of changing jobs and have a tour of the Thomas tomorrow as part of my induction.

Now that's a real big boy's toy!

OK Tony - any job that's involved with the marine industry has its good points & if part of your induction is an inspection of a vessel you betta spill the beans & tell us what the new job is  :news

Let me guess - is it counting fish scales?, but no, no, no not the weighing variety but the little ones [scales that is] that keeps the fish flesh dry  :?:

My bet is 10:1, is that Sandy will out guess me with a better story within 24 hours -  Derek

Hi PD's,

I couldn't resist the challenge.. :hehe  :hehe .....
I think 'Tony's 1/10 scale crewmen have been arranging a GOTCHA! with the union reps...and are about to get their own back for all the silly jobs they have had to perform..... :D  :D
It is they' that have arranged the arrival of Tony's ship and the offer of a new job.
What he thinks will be a calm and informative excursion on his new ship actually is a little more .......'DEEP SEA DORY' is actually a polite name for the brown sticky, and very smelly, by-product of the sewage industry, which is often dumped in deep water. I fear that Tony will be handed a shovel, when he reports aboard...and asked to move it from one hold to another.....
As in most industries, it is the lot of newcomers to endure a lot of silly pranks as part of their initiation, and I am sorry to report that 'TONY' is no exception.......and 180 tonnes of it is going to...... HUMMMM!
Good luck with your new job Tony.....

BTW.. Derek...are you aware that the 'DORY'...the fish that is (what have got scales!!!)..is renowned for actually eating this same sticky brown substance...
:nose  :hmmm......Think I'll stick to xxxx and Vegimite..

You will be pleased to hear that PS DECOY's boiler has passed it's pressure and steam tests, without any problems....discounting the crunching sound at -5 Bar (I had to use a vaccuum gauge instead of the normal pressure gauge, to allow for the hemispheric inversion), and the slight hiss of inrushing air that followed it,....no water or steam leaks though...Its also a good job that Butane/Propane gas is heavier than air, or I would have had a lot of trouble with the burner flames going the wrong way.....should be fine once it's in OZ though..... I still think it looks a little strange with the funnel coming out the bottom...but then I only make em!!!...  :?    :hehe  :music  :hmph  :trophy

Keep happy.

Regards.

Sandy.

PS...as regards to SIPHONS....some of the early steam powered vessels, which tended to use Side lever, or oscillating engines, did indead have a pump (refered to as a siphon pump) to discharge the condensate which inevitably arose when starting up, especially from cold.
when fixed cylinder engines became the norm, a similar siphon pump was used to discharge the starting condensate, in much the same way as on a railway locomotive, which has drain cocks fitted to each end of the cylinders, in this case the discharge just went on to the line side gravel, wherase on a ship, it was usually discharged over the side.

In later years, when condensing engines became more the fashion, then the discharge just went into the hotwell along with the outfall from the condensers. This was subsequently very heavily filtered, to get rid of any oil etc, and then returned to the boiler, usually via an injector or a high pressure water pump...both of which were/are steam driven.

Well done Sandy, we all knew you'd rise to the challenge!

Mind you, trying to defeat all the Aussies on this site single handed is probably a bit much even for a staunch Scot! :-)

Grief Eddy, can you remind me where exactly we found Sandy?

Had a good look through this'un today:

this one's the Avro Chieftain, a longliner that is leaving NZ waters in a week or so bound to Antarctica after Patagonian Toothfish. She runs a million hooks, 25 thousand per line. She leaves in ten days and will be in sub-Antarctic waters for close to 3 months.

My window is second from left (shore-based - not porthole!) so there's no escaping the Kiwi just yet!

Well PD's - tis clear as the mist over the ocean that I won the bet & Sandy_ACS did come back with an alternate new vocation for Tony

However poor me - must have been an Irish wager as I have no one to collect my winnings from - oh well I am not a gambler anyway :no1 - how stupid of me as I set the odds @ 10:1 & that good odds from what I understand

Tony - I have noted your response re another blue painted fishing vessel with lots of potential to get cold fishing for that fabled 1/2tooth padywhat named fish  :?: , but why have you neglected to divulge the new occupation, or don't you know yet :?:   :!:

Lastly - I take full credit/debit [depending on which way you view things] for inviting the distinguished S Cambell [Esquire] LO, DP & alms - to log onto PD's - but to better understand the meanings of the post/anti salutations above Tony, you may need to go back your non convict stock history as my forebears only had serial numbers after their given name  - Derek

On the long of flying boats and paddlers the 'paddle cat' has the ?hull? of a catalina flying boat.

So flying plane, boat and paddler all in 1.

Well no cigars handed out for those guesses - pitiful really! Just pitiful!

I've been privileged enough to have just joined the largest seafood company in Australia and New Zealand, Sealord. I've joined their performance improvement team, managing acquisitions and mergers, and get to crawl around everything that moves and is even remotely related to the company.

I've been down at head office this last week doing just that.

Pity was that as I flew out this evening one of the factory trawlers we lease off the Russians was coming into port - over 150 metres long and like a small city, albeit a very rusty city! Perhaps next trip I'll get aboard her!

Tony
