Eddy, in the Model Boats Forum there was a remark under accessories column about jjc electronic's sound modules being the best in the world. Have you any experience with jjc, if so how do they compare with RAM?

Have a nice day,
TJ

I've only seen their sound units once Joe, at a show about a year ago...  The ones I heard were a couple of gun sounds and a destroyer siren. They seemed okay, but I wouldn't say they were anything out of the ordinary. I can't comment on their engine sound modules as I've never heard them.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but my own personal opinion is they need to improve before they come anywhere near the sound quality of the RAM units - Now watch someone shoot me down in flames for that! :-)

One thing that I forgot to mention Joe, the units did seem to be VERY loud compared to others I've heard, but that may be purely because they were on a demo stand with a very good amplifier?

OK I was just wondering.

I don't remember if you're a member of the yahoo group RC Scale Model Boats or not. If you are you can check out more photos of the G L FURR Ii placed in the photo gallery.

I haven't heard the RAM sounds so can't compare, but the JJC ones are all actual recordings digitised, so compared to Action or Hunter Systems very realistic. They are loud because they have also developed a shaped tube to fit over the speaker which is designed to 'amplify' the sound - I don't think he uses extra amplification at the shows.

Ralph at RAM technologies has always used chips to record digitized sound bites in his sound modules, so I guess they're pretty comparable. I used to send him sounds back in the early 90's. He used to make custom sound modules for us.

Interesting comment Barrie

In my callow youth I used to build my own stereo speaker cabinets - strictly amateur stuff but still had a heap of fun with folded horn designs, PVC pipes, etc.

Regardless of speaker size you can get a very loud output for a given amount of voltage input. The key is in preventing the backwave from the cone from interfering with the front wave, particularly for lower frequency sounds. No reason why the same principles shouldn't apply to model boats - despite the smaller scale and limited space.

That's what the shaped tube's doing - isolating the front wave from out-of-phase interference from the backwave

Better still, build a tiny box around the speaker and line it with acoustic wool.

Goodness Tony - I was in the same boat [no pun intended] & twenty years ago built a Japanese Corel set [with al cast speaker frames] but  my greatest build was with the famous British KEF B139 semi oval base resonator in the 1/4 wave KEF design box :music - I assume my first wife  :nah still has them in Queensland?!?

BTW - I have just installed Microsoft Office 2003 professional & in the received e-mail screen I see the little EMOTICON box but cannot get them to work - any clues :?:  - Derek

V. nice Derek. I could only afford basic pioneer speakers but did make some honking enclosures - my favourites were a pair of folded horns using the '56 Jensen Imperial design - man, they could shake stuff off the neighbour's shelves at 80W.

I'm not sure what's up with the emoticon issue - I go to the website to check for updates and the emoticons work there - never tried the email subscription thingie.

Sorry Eddy for subverting this thread - promise I'll behave in future!

Tony
