The first ro-ro ferries - paddle steamers of course

Hi all

Found this page which may be of interest.

It describes the first two vessels built as "drive through" ships for road vehicles - in 1872!

Steam paddlers in Istanbul, named SUHULET and SAHILBENT.

So, if you like modelling cars as well as paddlers, here is the ideal prototype!

Excellent posting, David.  Thank you for bringing up this interesting topic and for the link you posted which I thoroughly enjoyed .  You prompted me to look through my Turkish paddler book, "Bosphorus Steamers of the Sirket Heyriye", where I found 7 excellent photos of "Suhulet" and "Sahilbent" (unfortunately no drawings, though.)  I find Turkish paddlers very interesting with their distinctly British heritage and yet quite unique superstructures and bridges.

Talking of Ro-Ro paddlers, I'm reminded of some of the Isle of Wight paddlers and the unique little "Menna/Alumchine" which all make very interesing modeling subjects which could feature a collection of vintage vehicle models.

Thanks again.

Here are three interesting photos depicting the superstructure transition of "Suhulet" from her original configuration through what was possibly her major refits in 1930 and 1952.  As David says, an excellent modeling candidate in any of her guises.

These photos are from the book "The Bosphorus Steamers of the Sirket Hayriye" by Ahmet Guleryuz and Hande Yuce and can be found on pages 44-48.

Hi Paul and all

It was actually an ebay ad for your book that got me digging - I was trying to find anything I could on this, or any other books on Turkish passenger vessels.   Anyone know of any?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=378&item=4564861678&rd=1&ssPageName

AT $50 US dollars plus postage (from Turkey) a bit beyond my budget at the moment, though.

Regards

David

Edited to add PS

ABEbooks has two copies only, at £46 plus.   This seems to be very expensive for a book only published 3 years ago which would normally still be available new.

The operators Sehir Hatlari published  a couple of historical books on Bosphorus steamers. These were private  publications and were not for public sale, as far as I know.
There are also a series of three paperbacks in the Iletisim  Istanbul series by Eser Tutel, about Turkish ships, one on Sirket-i-Hayriye, one  entitled Seyr-i Sefain, and another which I cannot lay my hands on at  the moment. This has a large list of ships including Paul's favourite Tuzla, ex  Diana Vernon.
Paul, I have just been looking through this book tonight and  realised it has a photo of Tuzla. It is a very poor one, though and I am not  certain if it is in Turkey or at Worthing.
This is a change from my visits to Istanbul in the eighties,  when I purchased a home-made fold-out book on Sirket-i Hayriye containing a few  old postcards, a number of photocopies of old postcards, a page from an old  company report with a fleet list and a couple of jetons, the tokens  used to gain access to the steamers

Hi Alistair:

If you have a moment, would you please scan the image of "Tuzla" in your book so I can see if this has any "Turkish" mods or is, as you suggest, possibly a picture of her while still on the south Coast.

Very best regards
