I got 13 photos of the moose sternwheeler. There wasn't anyone
around, but from what I could see they used a small 2 or 4 cycle
engine to power a hydraulic pump which in turn powered the wheel. Go

The S S Moose is used in the regattas held around the area. They have
a big sternwheel regatta in Charleston, West Virginia every year.
There's probably around ten or more paddleboats just in the
Charleston / St. Albans area owned by individuals.

Madison Coal & Supply owns four that are still used in moving barges
and pushing crane flats.

That's a Wisconsin 8 or 10 hp 4 stroke. Common industrial engine for
anything from cement mixers to generators to whatever. Good choice.
Lots of "grunt". I like the hydraulic pump idea too. I'll bet the
engine came with the pump and they added a pump motor. Hydraulics are
great for this - no slippage positive power. Great idea.

You know, if S.S. Moose were a sidewheeler, a raised pilothouse and a
longer fore deck, and a different prow, she'd look like an Alligator!

Maybe I will build a "scale" model some day.
